Well, I got the axles out of the housings and need to remove the bearing cups to replace the oil seals. Looks like a job for a bearing/gear puller? any thoughts? This is a first for me. Thanks for any suggestions. Bob@allisdowneast

Good morning Bob,
You mean you need to pull the outer bearing cones from the axles to replace the axle seals don't you? You should be able to drive the cups out of the housing to replace those. Yes, a puller would do it, or the right bearing splitter, supports and a press. You run the risk of damaging the cones either way so you may want a line on new bearings (I have SKF 387AS for the cone and SKF 382 for the cup, SKF 27470 or National 415009 for the seal; may or may not match yours). By the service manual you also should have a "U" shaped plate about 1/4" thick to put between the axle flange and seal when installing the axle. The plate pushes the seal into the bore. Remove it when the seal is flush to the housing then continue assembly.

Jim, yes, I meant the outer bearing cones. Looks like an opportunity to buy more tools. Thanks for the response and info. Bob

Harbor freight has a cheep separator / puller set that will probably work if you don't use it every day. If you want better quality OTC makes a set but you will pay considerably more. Harbor Freight has 25% coupon on the thirty first and the first.

If you are replacing the cup, all you need is arc welder and place a few short beads and it will just about fall out, no puller needed.

I have to try that someday! If I remember!
Great tip that could save a lot of work!

If you are replacing the cups I'm with old farmer"s suggestion to use the welder. I have done it many times, to install new ones put them in freezer and then tap in with brass drift.
