Gentlemen. We are currently running an 82 L2 and thinking of upgrading. Dad floated the idea of an L3 but I don’t think we would gain much. I’m pushing for an R52/62 depending on what we find close. I know the difference between the two but I have noticed that R65s aren’t that much more expensive. I don’t know much about them. Is it worth the extra money to go to a 65. What differences are there from a 62-65.
I do all the maintenance and I can fix anything mechanical. Electronics however are not first nature to me. Would I do better with a 62 or are the 65s fairly reliable. I know it’s a lot of questions. Thanks in advance. |

Go with the later R62. The R62 will give you a few more HP and you will like an air reel on a bean head. Gleaner painted them in around 2000. The painted machine will give you a larger cleaning shoe. A lot larger. I would take a rock door over a rock trap. A "hump kit" can be added to a rock door for added protection. Lateral tilt is great for a bean head and you get rid of the reel pump drive.

The larger cleaning shoe came out in 1996, a couple years ahead of the painted Gleaners which they painted them starting in 1998.

You will be AMAZED how easy it is to switch from corn to beans and vice versa assuming you have both. I have done it ny myself including heads in 15 minutes. Used to take 2 people about an hour and a half! 99 R62 here and it hasn't been trouble free I have never missed the old L2.

thanks for all the responses so far. One question is still have is with regard to the electronics. I know the newer machines are all controlled by a computer/monitor. And if that computer goes down the machine quits. I really don't want to get in a position where I'm sitting with my thumb up my XXX waiting on a computer tech. what are your thoughts on all the electronics?

I'd be more concerned about the CAPS fuel system on the late R62's, yr.2002 and the early model R65'S 2003-2005. We had both of these models and while they didn't fail us completely, they had issues early on during their warranty period that required service from Cummins. It's pretty obvious when the Cummins Tech talks trash about the CAPS fuel system. I'd look for a SISU powered one 2006 or newer, we had a couple of these and got along fine. Otherwise a late model R62 8.3 CTA powered one would be my next choice. I wouldn't be all too concerned about the electronics on the combine. Even in my S78 the operator still has control over the settings and functions, e.g. transmission controls, sieve and chaffer settings etc. The S9 series takes the electronics to the next level. Good Luck, Mike

I wouldn't be concerned by the caps system. The reason cummins techs bad mouth it is they are incompetent when it comes to understanding how to diagnose problems. The system is very simple and really rather robust.

We had a L3 traded for R-52. Ran one fall traded for R-62 (more power, larger bin). Had 2 more R-62s. The 2001 had the Cummins with the high pressure injection system. That machine: one computer just off warranty, valve stuck shut in high pressure system combined at a crawl all weekend because it was running on half fuel, parts were changed by Cummins on Monday (I think that bill was $2000.00) a couple years later same part gave out to dump fuel into crankcase ( I think it was another $2000.00). Traded for R-75 (more power, SISU engine)) had electric fuel pump give out wouldn't run ($300.00) Traded for S-77 (DOG!!!) traded for draper header also (I now want to drive faster and faster) ran 2 years trade for S-78 (ran it for 4 years (content with it) don't like screen in the S-97. I would suggest the R-65 or R-75 with SISU for a upgrade from the L2-L3

R65 has the newer cab. Which is a lot nicer as well.
