After this week-ends valve cover replacement on the XT, dad has decided to "paint" the tractor since the majority of the sheet metal is on the floor/saw horses. And I must agree with a previous poster, the "proper" way to do this job easily and to see WTH is going on is to remove the hood! That being said, dad wants NO part of buying/installing the hood decals at the very least. My brother over heard this and pulled me aside and asked if I knew a source for decals and I said yes,MH's. Brother said he would  "go-in" on a set(blew me away!!) and felt the install should simple. To those that have done "farmer resto's", can the new decals be installed over the old with any sort of success?? Thanks

Putting new decals over the old ones looks like someone just didn't care to put some effort in their work.  There have been many cases where you could see the old decal through the new one.  If you are going through the work of painting the whole tractor, take some extra time to strip off the old decals.  In the end, you should want a job that will look good up close.  Anything can look good from 30' away.  I have experienced that many times in the past.
Also, if you do not have experience in putting on decals, have a professional come out and do it.  It's hard to get those long hood decals on straight and without waves.  I paid a sign maker in town come out to put the decals on my XT.  She charged me $50 and it was money well spent.  There is no way that I could get them this straight...

Yes, it is a 1967 Series I with the 301 turbo diesel.  I am not saying you should go for best in class, just don't cut corners.  The only thing it costs is some time to remove the old decals.

Thanks ,and understand the "not" cutting corners LOL! Ours is a '68 and we don't have the plumbing setup above the injector pump like yours, and our stack exits by the "CH" on the decal (CHALMERS) ?

I am thinking he has a straight 190 and the ex is coming straight up from the manifold...
unless somebody slipped a turbo in backwards on a straight one-ninety...  thats why I was hoping for a picture of engine.

I am in the process of doing just that but won't get them on "here" 'til tomorrow evening. All I am saying is that "his" pipe in the pic looks WAY far forward unless it is the "PRE CLEANER" stack and NOT the exhaust?? Perhaps the pic of his is "optical" illusion to me?? No dis respect intended to anyone. BTW,what is the 2-2 1/2" piping with the rubber hose clamps above and to the rear of the injector pump on the pictured XT?? I will have to get out to the farm tomorrow to take a "peek". Thanks!!

After seeing your pic Charlie, you are 100% correct!! It just seemed like D's pic showed the stack way ,way forward,LOL! I have a feeling I am confused with our gasser 180 that has discolored the A/C decal on the muffler side?? Thanks

Always got my decals from Maple Hunter Decals of Texas. Great decals, accurate, and well made. A little Dawn dishwashing liquid in a bowl of warm water allows decals to be placed and moved around while placing. Then start in the middle and work your way outward with a flat squeegee. Reapply some water if needed especially on the long decal. Some patience goes along ways. Get all wrinkles out and then blot with a dry towel. Set back and enjoy the beauty of how much better your project looks. Always place decals when all sheet metal is on the tractor, not while it is off. Makes it easier to line up properly.
As said above, never place decals over old decals.
