Backhoe repair.

   Hello all, im new to the forum. But a Do It Yourselfer and i own Allis Chalmers WD & CA. But i have a Massey Ferguson with a MF 54 backhoe on it and the rotary cylinder is leaking on top and in need of repair.  Anyone have some tips or lessons learned about bracing the backhoe boom and the dissecting of this monster.

	extend your boom all the way out. lower it onto some blocks to get the weight off of it. then remove your lines and pins. if you have it supported right the pin will drive out easily. I take all my rams to a hydr shop to fix. not sure what it will cost in your area. last one I had rebuilt was $185. if you do it your self just be careful. hate to see anyone get hurt fooling with these things. good luck

	Good advice on the disassembly. I would add that a merely leaky cylinder if you have a good hydraulic shop that will sell you parts isn't all that hard to replace seals in. I've done quite a few. Last one cost me something like 26 bucks. TDF

	You know. With problems like this one. There isnt anyone on craigslist or forums that do mobile repairs. Seems like a MUCH NEEDED TALENT

	please, pretty please be extremely careful when you remove it ,dang thing looks and IS heavy and 'awkward looking'. Use solid WOODEN blocks, NOT hollow cinder blocks. Obviously best to remove on a level concrete pad if possible, if not put large(24x30) patio stones down on firm ground. Maybe tie a strong rope or chain to local trees to keep it from tipping ? Call me paranoid, but THINK before doing. I do that now ,maybe cause I finally get Old Age pension and want to keep getting them !

	that rotary piston leak can be a bear to get to stop leaking , I had problems on mine and replaced the upper and lower seals and the top one is a real bear to get to slide over the shaft . in fact mine weeps some yet after new seals were installed . Allis , MF , and couple others uses that Cesna rotary piston - I also had some chips on inside rotor that I had to weld up and machine down as piston would try to swing past the port to buffer it at end of travel . Mine was a little easier to get to as it was mounted on the upper side of boom rather than between like yours . Other problem i had was the expanding pins that hold it onto hoe frame had been allowed to wear to the point some wear was present on the ears of cylinder casting holes I got my repair kit from a MF dealer as at the time no AC dealer seemed to even have a listing for the AC 650 detachable hoe for the HD4 - still have the 14' hoe but not the HD4 as some of the other cylinders also fit the AC 715 hoe
