In this spring this year it was pretty clear to me I needed more weight on the front of my 5020 when using the bush hog.  It occurred to me the simplest way to do this was to fill the front tires with water.  That should add close to 100 lbs to the front.   While I had the front jacked up to remove the tires I decided to check the gear oil in the front axle (this is a 4x4).  To my surprise it was full of water.  Not a rusty mess but the water was clear and clean.  I did some research on what the correct lubricant is for the front axle and it seem to be something obsolete.  Tractor supply didn't have it not could they offer a substitute.  I then figured that I had nothing to loose by putting 90w gear oil in there so that is what went in.  That was great until not long after the front axle started leaking like crazy.  Now I have a greasy, smelly mess.  It is funny, it was full of water and didn't leak a drop.  I'm starting to think there might not be any venting on the axle.  Axles that use 90w oil typically are vented.  This thing I don't know about.  I don't have any manuals to confirm if this is the case.  If the axle is NOT suppose to be vented I need to find a lube that won't push past the seals under load.  

Anyone have some wisdom to bestow upon me?

I just got done resealing the outdrive on my boat.  It takes 80-90w gear oil but it does not have a vent, per factory.  The manual says to use marine grade oil.  I spoke with the local searay dealer and they said Royal purple gear oil.  This stuff will not expand and contract much but you better sit down for the price.  I think it was $22 a bottle?

Have about 10 hours on it so far this summer, no leaks.

Yikes.  Don't think I'll put royal purple in my tractor at that price.
Was thinking I might have simply overfilled it with oil.  What I did was just added oil until it started coming out the filler plug like you would do on any axle.  
Now that I think about it; this things turn a really low RPM and does not NEED much oil at all.  If the axle isn't vented plenty of expansion area is needed.  Really I need to get a hold of a factory service manuals with all these spec in it.  

OH, by the way; adding water to the front tires made all the difference in handling the bushog.   It keep the front end planted very well.

Final drives on the 8000 FWA 's are not vented either. Learned the hard way not to over fill them.

Just don't let 'em freeze, with water in 'em.  I use windshield washer fluid, don't freeze down to -20ºF, and is easier on the iron, too...
