    Posted: 19 Jul 2018 at 9:45pm
Greetings all,
Was doing some work on the tractors today (8050), and had trouble seeing the oil level in the rear end.  The sight glasses were dirty, so it was hard to see the oil.  I found a plug of the same size as a spare sight glass I have, so I unscrewed the top one, and capped the hole.
I then cleaned the glass so it was clear.  Glass was dirty/hazy.  After it was cleaned, I placed it back in, and was back to business.

I assume the haze in the glass is just materials that are in the sump, and have not gone through the filter yet.  Also, do people clean those regularly, or does regular transmission filter changes keep your glasses clean/clear?  I replace my trans filters every year, so I am keeping up with that.  Perhaps just using lots of implements is bringing in contaminants?

Thank you,
John

I always clean mine when I replace the oil in the sump.  Sometimes I pull them when I fill up and use them as level plugs.

I think the glass just gets dirty from years, don't think the filter change will help that at all.

I always have a heck of a time seeing oil in there or not.  I've given up trying, I take out the top glass, add oil until it just starts to show up in the hole.

In our radiators we sometimes use the round sight glasses with the plate behind the glass and the ball between the plate and the glass. The ball rolls around and keeps the glass and plate relatively clean. Might work for oil too.
cheers,
