goofy thing is only 3yrs old and it will not run. problem started out to be intermittent, but eventually degraded to not co-operating at all. I replaced the flywheel key, no help, although I didn't think it to be the issue anyhow. Took gas tank off and cleaned, carb off and cleaned. I do have spark
I have been told by a fellow that runs a lawn care business, he has carb issues on Briggs and Stratton engines, later models. OK, so, I shall try a new carb (they are completely plastic, by the way). However, every part site I tried wants a model number, I, for the life of me cannot find a model number on this engine. I have the serial number, but not model. Anybody have any ideas on where I might look? |

The numbers used to all be on the shroud over the flywheel. I don't know what engine it is, might help with information

John, the only thing I have found on the engine is a sticker with the serial number, and another sticker with just a barcode, I assume that is a stocking number. These stickers are on the shroud. Its on a Sears model 247.370101 lawnmower |

i think that one will have the model and type all ran to gether, stamped on the back of the on the back of the block some of these new briggs we do have enter in the serial . i think briggs is really screwing up going to that stupid litttle sticker but your local mower shop should be able to fix you up with what you need

Lou,
If it's like one of my older ones that I couldn't find those numbers on initially, I finally found it on top of the silver valve cover(?), I think it is, looking down on it from above it. Edited by Jim Hancock - 06 Jun 2018 at 1:41am |

take the spark plug out and turn over with your finger on the plug hole to see if it has compression, might be a stuck valve issue.

model-type-code numbers will be on one of the valve covers. Nice thing is you can get the IPL( illustrated parts list) right from B&S ! All (most ?) of the OHV engines NEED to have their valves adjusted. the 'symptom' is harder starting, like battery won't spin engine over as easy as it used to..... Info is on the web. Last one I did , I found TDC, marked on flywheel 'screen' as 'noon', rotated CW to 2 oclock, adjusted valves to 5 thou, started right away. If it starts with a wee bit of gas in the intake, you may have a bad 'anti-dieselling solenoid'. That's the tubular thing with a wire on it screwed into the btm of the carb. It should 'click' when you turn key off-on-off-on.They are quiet so you'll have to 'put your listening ears on' ! If it doesn't work ,It stops gas flow. Jay |

Hey Lou,,since you already checked compression, check the other two things it has to have to start. Remove air filter and spray WD40 into intake to see if it will start,,if no start, it is the fire. Remove spark plug and check plug wire to a good ground while cranking engine. If no fire you may have a bad magneto under flywheel. OR,, flywheel contact areas to magneto are dirty or most likely rusty, not allowing magneto to fire. If contact areas are rusty, remove magneto and steel wool all contact areas on flywheel AND the magneto (coil) contact areas. You can use a match cover to set gap to flywheel. I have fixed a great many lawn mowers with only this cleaning. Good Luck. Since you already got the Sears number, go to " Searspartsdirect" and you will get all the info you need. The 247.370101 IS the model number you will need for any parts. Edited by desertjoe - 06 Jun 2018 at 9:24am |

Get a new spark plug. Sometime the plug seems fine and it will be bad. Try not to use Champion brand. |
