OK, I've got a 10 yr old, 9.8/10 Cub Cadet here with a Kohler Courage 20 engine in it that now has a vertical crack in the 'lower block', near the magneto. It still runs and has ONLY 92 ( yes, ninety two) hours on it.
Looking for opinions...
do I keep engine and weld the block ?
do I keep engine and JB Weld it ?
scrap engine and replace with something else ?
any /all ideas/comment appreciated !

If it is not in a stress spot I'd try JB weld or similar. You can always weld it later if it does not hold. The question is why did it crack in the first place? Good luck with it.

Clean it good, JB Weld, and keep running it.

IIRR, these were cheap chinese motors, cracks can be fixed, but poor quality can't.  Have a rep, for valve train problems.

Is this the spot?

I would stitch the crack, if possible...

could buy a block only and transfer the inards of this engine into the new one? otherwise I would say to JB weld it, or replace the whole thing!

funny Gary, real funny.... the 'expert' is really my stepson, but I get it...

update, pulled the flywheel off to check the bolts..
Idiot engineers...man I'd LOVE, even PAY, to see them to fix this ! Can't get flywheel off cause the magnet has to come off first, DOH, so it'll have to be regapped....
cleaned, chased the pulling bolt holes...wow..flywheel actually came off !!
bad news... 1/2 the magnets are on the alternator coil....hmm, methinks the glue didn't glue the magnets to the inside of the flywheel, sigh... now I need to epoxy them back on or get another flywheel....
It seems this 'gator in the swamp' just had babies...

OK, the back story.... I bought this 10yr old rider low hrs, very, very clean rider for $200. Up here(southern Ontario) this machine will get at most $900 and even then it's a hard sell. Really ain't economical to dump $800 worth of engine into it ,then sell it cause ,sorry, I will NOT work for free...yeah, getting old and grumpy( turned 65 last saturday)...Engine swap will take 4-5 hrs,got 1 in already pulling the Kohler out. Dang nab it, battery alone is $65 up here and that's a 'cheap' battery.
I've already got a 17HP B&S that I could fit in,just need to adapt the wiring(not a big deal).
member now, this Cub Cadet is really an MTD,upgraded with cast iron axle and interference blades, but it's still an MTD. I use a 12 yr old MTD to cut grass so it's not that I will need the Cub...

Well my welder neighbour didn't like the challenge I presented, sigh. said..
1) muffler fell off
2) magnets fell off
3) BIG crack in block

So now I'm cleaning up a B&S 17HP OHV to replace the Kohler. I may check with 2 local Kohler dealers for a good block + flywheel as the guts only have 92 hrs on them, man I hate to send this to China...but...

UPDATE:
Dang, muffler for B&S don't fit easily, went back to option #??...
really, really cleaned block, ruffed it a bit, layed 3 coats of JBWeld (1 per day)used med locktite on case bolts  added ext tooth washers to bolts as well, epoxied magnets back onto flywheel, came back 2 days later. installed, added oil, battery  and gas.
it starts, runs, quiest BUT..... noticed  'darkness' below JBWelded area, arrgh...I'm thinking it's oil seeping....not gushing from the repair. cleaned it again, will test later today(run for 1/2 hr and let sit).
not too sure what else I can do besides tossing in another engine, don't want to sell 'as-is' but with <100hrs on it , it is a nice machine otherwise...
opinions, options, words of wisdom, comments
thanks
