Have a tractor that sat for awhile and have to trip the relay to get the 1 wire alternator working every time the motor goes back to idle. Is the relay causing this issue or can the magnetic field be lost permently from sitting. I'm not a fan of these but, was already installed, I think they seem to draw some power when not in use.

Delco SI alternators are internally regulated and don't have a relay. If you have a relay on one it's wired wrong.

The 10 SI needs a higher RPM to excite and once output is established it will stay charging or regulating internally - no magnetism involved until electric flows - as not like a generator with residual or self exciting .
If it's drawing power when off - bad diode in diode trio - replace that . look on back and there should be a U shaped hole in back casting - just inside a bit is a tab - if you take a small screwdriver and touch case and that tab it should give you full output from alternator - if not internal regulator could also be bad Edited by Coke-in-MN - 22 Mar 2018 at 8:26pm |

Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.

No external relay, you would be correct, it is the regulator that I'm thinking about in the alternator. This tractor is new to me and has not been working yet. Just trying to figure what I need to fix first.

Sounds like alternator replacement is in order. One wire alternators do not belong on a tractor, use a three-wire. There's nothing wrong with the Delco if it's installed/working properly...
