Have a 440 with a 555 Cummins and Eaton 10 speed that basically will not go in gear with the engine running, shut it off put it in gear and it is fine. Once in gear it has trouble pulling itself, took the inspection cover off and there is around 1 1/4-1 1/2 of free travel between the throw-out bearing and the clutch brake, which I know is by far too much. Is far as I'm aware there isn't any adjustment on the clutch itself, any help would be appreciated before I would have to pull the transmission.

Right on Hud. There is a two piece made. You have to cut the old one out carefully without burning yourself up. A little bit of clean up helps. Have you checked your linkage for wear? Fix it before starting any adjustments. Read your specs before you crawl under. I don't know what kind of clutch you have but we normally saw Eaton-Valeo, Spicer and Rockwell, but there are others. The Eaton had two collars that locked the clutch in place. Let the clutch out to knock them apart, then you can adjust them by hand. Clearance is a 1/2" on the bearing and 1/8" on the fork to bearing or close. Sometimes you also have to  adjust the linkage to get it to come in there. Both the Spicer and Rockwell have locks that bolts in a notch in the pressure plate. Remove it, push down the clutch peddle and hold. They make a special tool for this, but you can turn the adjustment ring with good sized screwdrivers or small pry bars. A little spray oil helps too. The later model Spicer and Rockwell have an adjuster already in there that you just push in and turn. (5/8") Push and hold this clutch to adjust. Have fun and hope this helps.

Your 440 is Steiger built just like my FW30 Ford is. Not sure the similarity may end their but on my Ford on the bell housing their is a small access door to remove under the tractor. Mine is adjustable maybe yours is also?

My advice is to call Big tractor parts in Hawley MN and ask for Ben he is super smart if he is no help PM your email address and I can see if the wife can scan and email the directions for adjusting the clutch on what I have maybe that will help.

From what I can tell on the clutch that there doesn't appear to be any adjustments like a big truck would have, hopefully there is some kind of adjustment on it.

The pull type clutch that is in this and most other Steigers and Versatiles, as well as most big trucks have 2 adjustments. The transmission brake is set with the linkage adjustment. Then the free travel is adjusted by turning the notched ring inside the pressure plate cover assembly. You have to turn the engine over until you can see the lock assembly, then it can be adjusted by rotating the ring while the clutch is held down. There is a tool for turning the ring, but I just used a prybar. This is done through the bottom access cover in the bellhousing. If it doesn't release, then there's likely something seriously wrong with the assembly, and it will end up needing replaced.
