Topic: Feed Grinder/mixer questionPosted: 21 Sep 2017 at 8:44pm |

I've got a D17 and a D19 both have gas motors. In a little more than a month from now there's a New Holland 353 for sale. I've searched and can't seem to find the specs on what it needs to run this grinder. Will any of these 2 tractors run it efficiently. Will be grinding ear corn mixed with barely and the usual minerals/salt needed for cattle feed. Thanks for any input.

The D19 will definitely run it. Not sure about the 17. The 19 will be a thirsty gator though when running it. Darrel

D17 runs a Gehl mill well! This mill ground two loads of feed a week from 1968 until just a few years ago. Is in the shed and still ready to go. Edited by DanD - 21 Sep 2017 at 9:30pm |

It will pull the 17 hard, however will work if it's a good motor. We had a 353 and ran on the 45 through the summer months years ago because the bigger tractors were busy. Green corn and barley pulled the hardest-- check the hammers and turn when needed. Story I have to pass on-- when the dealer came out to the farm and sell my father the new model 355, he looked around and wanted to know what we had to run it. My father told me to get the narrow front 45 (wich was very hot), 185's, d19, and 17's were there at the time mind you. The dealer said something to the effect that it wouldn't pull it. We backed to a load of fresh picked corn and started. My father grabed a peice of wire to hold the throttle wide open. Opened the mixer auger to the full setting(hydrulic ran) and the 45 had at it. The dealer came yelling to shut it down because he thought we were going to blow the bearings out of the gear box on a new machine! I was just a kid then and that was one of my favorite 45 moments. BTW-- the other tractors wouldn't have made that kind of PTO speed. We still have that mixer and run a least once a week with no ill effects. Those new holland machines are very good if someone greased the brg's regullar and didn't leave feed sit in them. Look it over very good and run it if there is an opportunity.

I have a Arts Way grinder mixer and most any tractor will pull it. I have had anything from a WD to a 190XT on it. If you want to feed it fast you probably need 50 hp or more. I have a 45 with MW pistons and it works real good on it

Your D17 will handle it.

My D17 grinds corn and alfalfa hay just fine. I would almost put the boys C on it grinding the corn. Should work just fine on either one.

They use to run those Gehl mixer mills with a WD when I was a whippersnapper. I don't know how their capacities compares to today's mills. I suppose any tractor will work as long as you don't feed it too fast.

shouldnt have any problem running it you slow your feed rate if you need to. itll wiegh twice as much when its full. if the ground is a little muddy you might need a bigger tractor to move it. We put about 1/2 full with pellets and grind shelled corn to fill it. Backing it into the Feed pen it sinks in the soft ground and takes a larger tractor to move it than it does to run it. Our IH grinder is about twice that size its 150 bu. if your minerals get wet itll plug youll know grinder dust comes out the top in a colum of dust.

I used my D-17 gas years ago when I first got a 353 NH. It worked ok but it was all it wanted and slow in ear corn. In 1972 bought a new 185 and could grind mixer full in half the time. Then bought a new 200 in 1974 and could grind it full in 18 minute. So there you are--how much time do want to spend grinding. Shelled corn is NOTHING compared to ear corn.

Either tractor should do fine. It will pull the 17 harder and be careful on hills with the 17. A full mixer can push one around. We run a 175d with a 353. Grinding hay will give the tractor anworkout as well.

I ground a load of cob corn in a New Holland using a D17 once a week back in 68 - 71. Never bogged down. Of course the engine was a lot newer then than most now, but I think one would still work fine.

No the 17 will run hot. Our 170 gas runs hot on our NH 353. Suggest using 19.

It'll be ear corn that I'd grind. Already got a price on a few gravity wagons and what that would cost me. And it be winter time on a Saturday so really in no big hurry to get it done quickly. I appreciate all the feed back.
