Had a little time to work on the forty five road grader yesterday, so we took advantage of it. We need it to get the hay area shaped up for hauling hay in. The worm gear shaft for the circle gearbox had bearings out, and the shaft was messed up at last report. Had a new shaft made, and got new bearings, races and seal lined up and ready to go. All went together with less trouble than I'm used to experiencing. Should have been a red flag! LOL! Then the next red flag, the thing turned over about 3 times and fired right up. Hasn't been started in at least six months. This is getting to good to be true. Then the tide turned. The knuckle buster lever for the circle only worked in the forward position, turning the circle clock-wise. Pulling the lever back to turn the circle counter- clockwise only resulted in a little mild chattering, but wouldn't turn the shaft. My plans are, when I get back to this project, are to pull that segment off the knuckle buster box off. What am I going to find there? Do I have to take the whole box apart, or is the problem going to be in the part that come off of the top? My back-up plan, if the gearbox fix is in-feasible, is to put an orbit motor onto the in-put shaft of the circle gear box, and run it off the auxiliary hydraulic pump with a two way valve in the cab. Any thougths...? Insight...? Anything for the good of the order....? Thanks, Darrel

Have one of the boxes on my Adams grader do the same thing - keep saying I should fix it - then remember I seldom use the machine so why bother - just 2 hand that lever so it doesn't chatter my teeth along with the gears - push hard it will go easy

Darrel
Jensales copy of AC-S-45MG page 97 "3. Power Control Box" Says you can swap the dog clutch gears front to back and get new wear surfaces so if yours haven't already been swapped you can get another life. I guess you turn the selector sleeve over too. I haven't been in here but I guess you take the back off the housing and that control tower off and then things should come out. And I could be wrong. If you were to go hydraulic motor I'd be interested in what you use. Ours has the wheel lean now done with a cylinder which walks a bit. So I've thought of using a motor on the lean gearbox (which I'd have to scrounge as ours is gone). |

Have you got the bolt on moulboard extensions then? They did have hydraulic side shift as an option. It would be handy on ours but that hydraulic circuit has been farmrerised for blade roll. |

fork and cogs may be worn inside the box. on my 145 had the same trouble. switched it out with the unused fork/lever and shimmed in the problem gear. problem fixed.

Forgive my ignorance here Cal, but is that all do-able without taking apart the entire gearbox. I'm completely unfamiliar with what goes on inside that animal. Thanks, Darrel |

ok Darrel you are in luck. the 45 and my 145 share quite a few components.
pull up this link. pg. 248 of pdf or pg 246 of the parts book shot the control box breakdown. the upper right show the breakdown of the shift fork mechanism. i had one with one side broken off. the assembly pulls straight up after removing 4x 3/8 bolts. you can inspect the fork and the engaging dogs item (17 and 18 gearbox pic) . they can get very rounded and not engage or chatter/jump. my blade circle would work one directon but not the other. after several attempts and not finding anything particularly bad/broken i did noticed that my case head (#2) was worn where that particular gear was. i added a machine washer between the gear #17 and case head and that fixed the problem. there was just enough wear between items 17,18 and 2 that it would not engage fully. you could have a broken gear, cog or shaft, but you should be able to tell by pulling off the control lever and draining the oil. which you will probably want to do anyway if its been setting outside. i have been into that gearbox as well as the pto box with new bearings and rebuilding the pto driveline. i have a bucket of extra gear case/misc parts. i might be able to help you should you need something.

Cal
As noted above you can reverse the 17-18-17 assembly and get new wear surfaces - if it hasn't already been done |

Thanks so much for the information, guys. I have a lot to go on now. I know that I am not going to have time to get back to this project again for a while now. But I'll let y'all know how it goes when I do get to it. Darrel

I've got 13 miles of interstate road ditch to hay. Have 100 acres of oats that we Hayed once already (only made half bale per acre) and it came back. Going to hay that again. Will have about 30 acres of silage corn to chop right at about first frost time. Then will have some buckwheat to swath and combine. And then some sunflowers to combine. After that, get ready for that pretty stuff that you love to send out all over the country. Darrel |
