I have my grandparents 1958 series I D17 getting restored right now for use on my acreage. I will want to move bales with it. It has the snap coupler lift arms on it now and I am wondering how hard it is to convert it over to a 3-point or if there is another option to use the current set-up with a bale spear? Is it as simple as just ordering a conversion kit and installing it or are there other things I should know first? No I am not real knowledgeable on this:) Thanks in advance!

Conversion is pretty easy:
This is a bolt-up option.
However, I have seen bale spears setup for the snap coupler. Controlling sway is a big deal so if you opt to build something, think that through.

Yeah it is pretty easy To find a 3 point conversion system. We did it on a 1960 D-17. But I'm not sure we improved it at all over the snap coupler.

The best conversion is the one Allis made, IMHO. It allows the traction booster, to still function. Not needed for a bale spear, or forks, but comes in handy for a disc or plow...
Not an endorsement of what Steiner sells, there are lots of the original AC made adapters, out there yet, often at a fraction of the cost of a new one, which is just a copy, of what AC originally made, as an adapter...

I bought a CA from Hubnut that already had an aftermarket conversion on it. All my 3 pt implements hook up fine to it -- no issues there. But even hooked up correctly it has very little sway control. Back end of my rear mount RDTH72 finish mower can swing back and forth 24 inches or so. I would not say "unusable" but it's annoying not knowing better where the implement is in relation to the tractor.

Picture above shows lower arms, adjustable links and 3 pt drawbar that I used to add mine. It allows me to keep drawbar and utilize traction control. All I did was weld a semi circle piece to the 3 pt drawbar to prohibit it from shifting on original drawbar.

The farther you get behind the rear axle centerline, the LESS you will be able to lift. I have no idea how big of bales you are thinking you are going to handle..... you didn't say. If your main goal is to just be able to move big round bales, I'd just built a bale mover that was snap-coupler and keep it as close to the tractor as possible. I'd think the bale should be right up against the drivers seat when lifted...??? also, your hydraulic pump better be making at least 3,000 psi or you might not be able to pick up anything.

Which is why I like the little Fords!  The Ford system has about 1/2" of sway to it once an implement is hooked up, except for certain tillage implements.
