 Topic: Hydraulic packing removal

I'm trying to replace the packing on my 1954 AC CA.
Anyone know of a way to get the old packing out without taking the whole cylinder off and taking it apart? I have the nut out but I can't see a way of getting the packing out.
Due to health reasons I can't get under there to remove the cylinder.

a "packing puller" basically looks like a screw driver with a cork screw welded on the end.. You screw it in a turn or two and PULL ......... Try screwing a drywall screw into the packing, then pulling with vice grips.

I have a rope packing puller like the one shown. Mine has a metal washer under the nut. It is too close of a fit to get anything in there.
My problem may be solved.
My neighbor came over to borrow a tool and he said he would take them off for me. He got one off and wasps came out of the other lift arm. I'm out of spray so there will be a delay while I go get some more spray. He said to call him and he would come back to help.

PS The replacement packing I got from Steiner isn't packing actually. It is stacked seals. I hope it works!

I needed a lot of distance! My Kroil won't spray that far! I used degreaser it sprayed about 10 feet. After standing it on end I was able to get the washer out. I think someone added it years ago to compress the seals more. It had rubber cup type seals, as was stated by someone above, with one fiber one on the bottom. I guess they call it packing for simplicity? The replacements alternate one rubber the next plastic and so on. The plastic ones were very hard to get in, but I finally got them. As soon as I'm sure the wasps are clear I'll call my neighbor back. Every time I go back to check there are 2 or 3 new arrivals.

Best time to get em is early morning or late evening. Use hair spray on em. it gets on their wings and they drop right down. You can get real close and not get stung.

problem is wasps are not to bright.. When you spray the next, several are " out looking around".. they come back later and the nest is TOAST... They don't get the hint, they just keep coming back , hoping the nest will be there...eventually you will spray them all.

I keep a spray bottle of mineral spirits that has an adjustable nozzle on it. It's my go to tool for wasps.
