    Posted: 07 Feb 2010 at 5:45pm
Here is a handy dandy little power crater piston chart I have made. It is based on original
pistons used in the 4.00"bore x 4.50" stroke 226 cubic inch A-C engines. This should be handy for everyone doing overhauls to tractor pullers looking at various combinations. I have included engine serial number references and really the key here the letter code at the end of the serial number found stamped into the engine block on the carburator side
of the block approximately 4" to the rear (towards flywheel) and inline vertically with the carburator intake. For example a WD45 tractor with engine serial 45-12345-G the G designates the piston used in that engine originally. Referencing the chart we can see that was the common piston used in a WD45 gas tractor with a 6:50:1 compression ratio. The original power crater piston originated in 1953 and who knows whats in some of these old engines today. It's also nice to compare against all the aftermarket pistons avalible today. For instance Brand X offers a piston kit they say for the wd45, D17, 170, & 175 gas engines under one part number. Chances are the guy with the 175 engine may get a piston with a 2.390" or 2.500" compression height instead of the 2.645" height he had originally and now his newly overhauled engine cranks out only 49 or 50 horse instead of the original 61 horses. Brand X choose not to offer a piston with that height based on the fact that only a few thousand of that engine was ever made in fact I'm unaware of any aftermarket piston for the 175 gasoline engine, if their is please post it. Please let me know if you guys see any errors so we can correct. Knowledge is power!

Thanks Mike,
I will put this in a safe place for a rainy day.
So if I'm looking at your chart right, I can put 170 or EIII pistons in a WD45 without doing block work to it is that right?

The mistake I know of is the stroke is 4.500, not 4.250.
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

Good information Mike. Thanks for posting it. BTW you might want to edit your post as you have a typo. I know that you mean 4.5" stroke not 4.25". Kip

Thanks Ted and Kip , of course 4.500 stoke not 4.250" stroke.  I would recommend anyone rebuilding a 45 engine to use at least the "M" code piston @7.25:1. The reason is the gasoline octane rating back in the early to mid fifties was about 74 octane. Today commonly available gasoline is 87-89 octane and the engine will burn cleaner with the higher compression. Zyta the 8.0:1 pistons will work just fine in a 45 also just remember
the 45 blocks are so prone to cracks at the top and the raised compression will increase the exhaust tempeatures a bit, and the cranking compression will be more so those old 6-volt starters will get a work out.  I'm sure that all of these pistons are readily available at AGCO today. I'm going to get a current price on the 170 pistons vs. the relatively rare
D17 propane/175 pistons tomorrow.

 Piston update
Bob the bad news is the high altitude piston have been discontinued by the manufacturer. It really wasn't a high altitude piston anyway but it was a very
decend kit at an excellent price. The pistons were made by Clevite heavy division
of what is owned by Mahle, a German automotive giant.  The piston had a 2.527
compression height or about a little more than the 7:25:1 "M" code A-C piston.
Isn't that the first thing the German's did with the Allis plant, discontinue all the good stuff? I also did some current looking into the AGCO sleeve kits and man do they have that messed up in my opinion.

I have just a straight WD but it has a 'Power Crater' sticker on the left side of the block by the carb. I know it's not a 45 block because it has the rectangular plate on the RS.
Does that mean anything or did someone just have an extra sticker and use it.
Scare sticker so to speak.
New here and trying to learn.

Sorry to bring up an older post, but agkits.com still lists the high compression kit. Are you saying that if i try to order one they won't have it? Otherwise it would seem to be what i'm looking for.

is advertised correctly and the M&W kit has a fair amount more compression over an original D17 piston and a 175 piston has quite a bit more compression than an M&W piston.

I left out the low octane INFO. This is taken from Allis Chalmers service manuals.
One more little bit of info to keep in mind 4 diff head gaskets where used in the later ser#WC/WF and WD/WD45 tractors alone,so all this info is going to be off some with the newer head gaskets we use in them today.
WC/WF gas early ser# factory piston 5.0 to 1
WC/WF gas later ser# factory piston 5.5 to 1
WD gas early ser# factory piston 5.5 to 1
WD gas later ser# factory piston 5.7 to 1
WD45 gas factory piston 6.45 to 1 below 4000 feet
WD45 gas factory piston 7.20 to 1 above 4000 feet
WD45 LPG factory piston 7.20 to 1 all heights
D17 1,2,3,4 gas factory piston 7.25 to 1 below 4000 feet
D17 1,2,3,4 gas factory piston 8,25 to 1 above 4000 feet
D17 1,2,3,4 LPG factory piston 8.25 to 1 all heights
170 gas factory piston 8.00 to 1 below 5000 feet
170 gas factory piston 8.25 to 1 above 5000 feet
175 gas factory piston 8.25 to 1 all heights
I hope this will help out someday.
Sorry I didn't post the INFO on E Gleaners, I can't find my service manual. Embarrassed
