I'd like to add power steering to my All-Crop Super 100, and I've been thinking of fabricating my own system. I've seen them homemade a few different times, and if a farmer back then could do it, so can I. They had a factory power steering kit, but I've only heard of 2 in existence, and I've never seen one in person. I couldn't afford one anyway. A friend of mine sent me a photo of Arland Lepper's power steering setup on his Super 100, and while that was helpful to see, I'm still confused as to how it works. Here is a photo.

Looks more like "power assist" than true power steering to me.
I've seen Ford and Massey Ferguson tractors with a similar setup, but my question is how does it work? I understand the pump driven off the motor, but how does that piece inline with the drag link work? What makes it direct the fluid to one side of the cylinder or the other? What is that piece even called? Ok...now I sound really dumb, but I want to figure this out. It can't be too complicated, I've just never worked or been around anything like that before.

how are you gonna build muscles if you do this? or isit so you can turn the steering tires faster as yer churning mud?

As for mud....maybe I should put a FWA axle off a 5000 series Allis on the back. Make a Mud Hog out of it! LOL

It looks to me that the valve is on the drag link. I think that when the drag link pushes the valve it opens the side to direct the fluid to push out the ram. When the valve is pulled it opens the side to direct the fluid to pull the ram back. When the drag link has no pressure back or forward then both valves are closed.

Why do you want power steering for?

When the hopper is full on my sp100 it still steers easily.

The valve is similar to the one on Ford 900 row crop tractors. They call it a control valve. A lot of cars in the 50's and 60's used a valve like that as well as some medium trucks.

From my experiences you generally have to leave one arm on the variable speed if you're cutting anything very heavy. Slowest speed isn't quite slow enough, so you kinda override the system by holding the lever further forward than the last notch on the rear section of the quadrant which allows you to barely creep. Yes, I know you could just not take a full swath, but sometimes you still only have 1 arm available.

Dennis...I just think it would be neat to have. Certainly don't "have to have it", but I think it would be nice. They're certainly not the worst steering, but a lot harder than a Gleaner. Thanks for the explanation. I was beginning to think that as well, but I wanted another opinion.

IMO keep it original. Then you will be all buffed out and get all the ladies, and this winter can go wrestle Shameless for the controls to the snow machine and win.

Then Shameless will go run the power steering-less All Crop and come back for a re-match. :)

But seriously, something is only original once. :)

Lol, that's true! I'm usually a member of the "correct police" (unless it's something that really needs changed) and I may or may not get around to doing this anytime soon. I'll just keep looking for the real deal I guess. If anyone knows of a 100 factory power steering kit for sale, let me know. Like I previously stated, I doubt I could afford one anyway, but it would be nice to know how many are actually out there. Like I said, I've never seen one in person, so they can't be too common.

Yes, any of the older combines used that same valve. Case used it on some of their combines maybe some other colors used it also. I put the same setup on my Chevy grain truck. If you weaken the centering spring, they will steer easier.   MACK

i have a special attachments book for my 100 and the power steering pump and bracket are the same as the power steering of a WD45 that mounts on the front of the motor! the reservoir tank mounts at the back though somehow! I can get you pics of the parts pages if you want!

Thanks, but I have that book too. I'm aware that part is the same, but the control valve, cylinder, etc. are the hard things to find.

I took that valve and cylinder off a Greene combine and installed on my A2.Didn't know if existing hyd would work it or how to plumb it so I added a pulley to drive pulley and plumbed a GM car PS pump.

Have a salvage MM uni-tractor that has the power steering set-up still intact. Cylinder, motor and pump driven by crankshaft pulley with belt. Neighbor used one of these to put power steering on a self propelled silage cutter some years ago and it worked well. Send me a pm if you're interested in knowing more details.
