At the end of first cutting this year the rubber started coming off the rollers on my haybine so I'm looking to upgrade to a discbine to pull with the 175 and the 6060. What do you all recommend. And which do you prefer flails or roller conditioner? Of course I'm looking for used because new isn't in the budget. Thanks in advance.

I have a 9' nh 7220 which has roll conditioning that I pull with a 185. Some folks like the flail setup. My dad had a John Deere with flails and he said it pulled hard. My local dealer said most folks were going back to the rollers. I am very pleased with mine. I spent the extra and got hydraulic tilt and it was worth every penny. I think the manual calls for 65hp minimum.

8 or 9 foot max with those tractors I would think. They really take the power, especially if you were to work them to "capacity". If you're familiar with what roll conditioning does for your conditions and are generally satisfied, I'd stick with it.

The discbine will take just about all the power those tractors offer. I think the rubber rollers are more gentle on alfalfa and doesn't knock the leaves off as much as the flails.

A new idea 5209 , Deere 920-925, New holland 1409 or the newer models would all be good machines for you. In the NI get a red one id you can as there were cutterbar improvements over the gray ones. Do not buy a NH 411 or Deere 1327 as parts are way overpriced. I like rolls better than flails. Tom

I use a 9' discbine with rollers and in thick and I mean THICK tall grass that's twisted and mangled it's all my 200 wants behind it. A 175 or 6060 might work with a 9' discbine in average conditions but sooner or later you will be under powered.

I have a 1320 hesston that has been a good mower . pull it with a 6060 in most hay but in tall rye I cut for straw I use a bigger tractor. I would buy another 1320 but I'm sure new Holland has a great discbine also. Crimping rollers is all I would use. Scott

What ever you decide on make sure each unit is separated from the next. If you ever break a pod or unit it won't contaminate the rest of the pods.

I have a Deere 915 with flails, it's an 8 ft machine that works well in my grass based hay. The manual says it needs at least 55 HP, and I can believe that. I run it with either a 63 HP Zetor or my 180, and tall thick hay will make either one work hard if you're trying to run at 6 mph or more. It would probably be ok with your tractors, but you would definitely know it was there! Overall, I like the machine a lot, although I wish it was easier to adjust the cutterbar angle like the newer ones. I'd recommend either the Deere like mine, or maybe a New Idea 5209 (also sold as Case IH 3309 or as an Agco or MF/Hesston).

I have a Deere dealer and Massey/ New Holland dealer both about an hour away. Actually the New Holland dealer has a 525 Deere Discbine on the lot that they are supposed to be getting me a price on.
