Did AC change the transmission gear shift from straight to curved on the WD? I just pulled my WD home and found that it is a 1951 not a 1948 as I was first told. I was given an axle casting number that I checked on instead of the correct serial number. If the AC Company changed the gear shift what year was that change made?

The (very) late WD's and all WD45's had the curved shifter. I believe the change from straight to curved took place in the 1953 model year.

Curved gearshift change happened at s/n 127,007 and up.  The transmission was of a constant mesh helical gear design instead if sliding spur gears in the straight gear shift models.  The older WD transmission was essentially a WC transmission moved rearward.

According to the serial number reference (from this site), the last WD serial number built in 1952 was 126981. If the change was at serial # 127,007, it had to be in 1953.

You may be right, I think I was mixing up the high cylinder head with the gear shift change. I think it was the high cylinder head that came on in '52.

There was a break in serial numbers in 1952:

First batch:        105182-126931
Second Batch:    127007-131242

The change in transmission style coincides with the second batch of serial numbers.

The "Tall" head was introduced in 1951 with "Engine" Serial #289001.

I have my Dad's '51 WD with "Engine" serial #309267 and it has the tall head.
