Piled wagons for years in upstate NY and we had one particular field that required feathering the clutch to "tighten" the load and my father had the touch to do it. Caused some friction as a teenager, thought sometimes he was doing it to just bust my chops.
Some farmers swore by old milk straps they fastened in specific areas of the wooden wagon floor. We did not as it made it hard for the younger ones to slide those 50-55# bales across the wagon floor when unloading on the barn bridge.
Good memories and you slept well after a good 1500 bale day, especially as I got to stay in the field baling until sundown and I got out of milking.
Eight kids and everyone worked in those days.
Brother now struggles to find young folks to throw hay, even at $150 to unload 5 or 6 kicker wagons . . . . .
