I have a 190xt III and the gears on the main shaft slide back and forth more than 1/16 of an inch. Will it be ok to run & drive like that?

The only way you'd know there was any endplay, is by removing the shift cover. Why did you remove the shift cover ??? Is it jumping out of any gear ?? If it isn't jumping out of any gear, and not making any unusual noises, I'd say it's just fine for an old tractor. Run it.

I removed the cover to move the 3rd gear detent. It does pop out of 3rd, but it doesn't seem to engage all the way. I can push it past the detent a ways and very lightly hold it and it will not pop out. The 3rd gear itself is hardly worn, but I am wondering if I can tighten up the end play on the main shaft, because the back and forth play could contribute to it popping out.

Make sure the thrust washer between third and second gear is in there. Occasionally, that big thrust washer breaks and falls out of place leaving a lot of endplay on the top stack of gears. Removing any endplay from top shaft parts requires a split and probable trans teardown.

The washer is not there. I was able to look at my 190 parts tractor and I see exactly what you are talking about. I guess I can try it the way it is and see what happens.

If it is not there, 2nd and 3rd gears can actually rub each other. I wouldn't use it heavy, if it was mine. Actually, I wouldn't use it at all if it was mine.

You have to ask yourself.....where is that 2 1/2" diameter washer?? laying in the bottom of the trans compartment waiting to be picked up by the spinning countershaft gears ?? And, if it isn't in the trans compartment, someone has already fished it out with a magnet and sold the tractor knowing there was a problem.

Well the tractor is operable the way it is, and I don't see the point of spending 30+ hours to tear down a working transmission. I know I will have to get into it eventually, so might as well wait until it goes out before spending all that time.
