B rebuild-Sleeve height

Rebuilding a 53 B. New sleeve flanges measures .250" and are sitting .010-.014" above block deck. Old sleeve flanges measures .247" and sit .007-.010" above deck. How critical is the .002-.005 spec and should I have the counter bores adjusted? Also how critical is the .001-.005 crankshaft endplay spec,what is realistically acceptable?

Are you measuring the sleeve height without the O rings?? If you are measuring with the O rings on the sleeves you will need to remove them and measure without and clean all mating surfaces well before placing the sleeve back in.

 If you get past .010 end play it will get more in a short time running. Then it will cause the rod to ride on the side which will cause rod bearing failure. Once the metal fines caused by the rods riding on the side of the journal it will start to cause damage to all bearings.
If the tractor is only used a few times a year to pull a float it might not cause any problems for years.

Yes, sleeves are measured without o rings and counter bores have been cleaned to remove any debris. Sleeves turn freely by hand. Just wasn't sure how much was too much height.

If you have over ten thousands .010 above the deck it could be problematic.  Are you checking with a dial indicator or feeler gage?   If they are all about the same and your sure you have removed all the scale from the recess it will most likely work. I have never seen sleeves that much above the deck so it is only  in this case an opinion.  You should still have enough press on the head gasket at torque to seal.

Checked with a magnetic base dial indicator. I have no history as to if the block has been decked but doesn't appear to have been based on all indications. Just curious that stock sleeves are out of spec as well. Any suggestions on how to clean the counter bores in case I haven't got all the scale out?

I always used a small wire wheel on a die grinder and picked at anything that looked suspect with a small scriber.

Ya might try to depth mic the c'bore. You can then mic the sleeve and compare measurements. Is it possible there is a sharp corner on a sleeve that is held up in the c'bore, not letting the shoulder meet the bottom of the c'bore?

I don't know about the B's, but my aftermarket WD45 sleeves had a thicker flange by .002. Maybe The B's are too. Head another person on here say the same thing about his WD45 kit too.
