I just bought this NOS filter for $9. Did I do good? What's it really worth? The logo tells me it's between 1949 and 1965, but can anyone narrow it down further? I'm probably going to put it on my Super 100 during the shows at Hutch, then take swap it with a different one for the rest of the time. Only thing that worries me doing that is it maybe getting swiped. Thanks!

A box of 3, around here usedta cost about a hundred bucks, around here, at auction. Haven't seen too many sell at auction, lately. This is the newer model flat top filter, the oldrt ones had a seam, at the top, they always brought the most. Check prices on Ebay or ask fred...

Don't put it on! The filter media has dried out and could shred with bad results. You did good in buying it. Buy about a 100 of them and finance you collage education. LOL

Don't use it Creston! The filter material has probably done what a piece of wood can do. Dry rot. So it could come apart and really mess things up. Buy a 100 of them at that price and finance your collage education.

Man I wish I picked some up. When I was a kid the farm across the way had a auction and I remember some filters like that in the shed. I know for sure they just got thrown away. Plus they prolly came from my grandfathers dealership

I've never heard of this type filter dry-rotting, either. If there's no water damage, I bet its as good as the day it was made...

I would maybe put it on while sitting at the show, then swap before you run it. That way you'd never get it full of oil, and would still look good sitting in the machinery rows. Of course I'd forget and drive off with the old filter.

IMO that style filter has little chance of going bad. It's filled with cotton scraps. Take an old one apart once. It has more than pure cotton in it, it's got pieces of stem and what not along with the white cotton. Unless it has sat in water it should be good to go.

I have NOS Fram, Purolator, and Wix in the soup can style. On my WD I use the Wix for shows. I remove after the show and place in a plastic zip lock bag and reinstall the newer Fram filter for raking hay.

Creston Cotton deteriates as does paper in filters, many years ago I spent 14 years as the owner of an oil company. Spent many hours in test labs, etc. Saw some results of using old filters on equipment. the result isn't good. Do your self a big favor--Put it on the shelf.

I've been looking at this filter more, and it seems in inside is filled with what I would never consider typical oil filter packing material. I can see there's a wire screen behind the conical piece on the bottom, but behind that seems to be a jumble of different colored string. There's green, blue, white, orange, red, tan, etc. It looks like someone raided grandma's sewing cabinet and stuffed it inside. Is that how they're supposed to look??? I figured they'd be mostly full of white cotton, not....multi-color string....
