couple years ago I bought a 1954 CA for my son, and when I got it running it would run really really rich and sound like it was flooding out and realized it is the wrong carb for this engine. so I found a guy wrecking a CA bought the carb had it rebuilt (just to cover my bases) put it on and its doing the same thing! Checked out the carb model and it is the correct carb. My dad thought maybe the air cleaner was half choked off so I pulled the cleaner off and let it get direct air.....no change! Ive tried anything I can think of to get it to run but nothing. Just sounds like im trying to run it on half to three quarter choke all the time and yes I did check the position of the choke butterfly!! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Could you explain exactly step by step how you adjusted the carburetor? A picture of the carburetor on the tractor would also help.

I adjusted the float level, the idle screws. I checked all the orafices everything is clear. I am stumped! Just wondering if it has the wrong jets?

That is an over view not the step by step I was hoping for. I was after where you started adjusting and how. If the carburetor was cleaned and properly adjusted I would then move to a different problem that has nothing to do with the carburetor.

First thing I did was adjust the idle and high speed jets then took it apart to check the float make sure it wasn't loading up with gas and sinking, then when that didn't work I pulled apart and adjusted the float height and nothing. Still acts like its flooding out. I never had the manifold off, I'd like to get it running better I bought it for my son to drive when's older!

How slow was you able to get you RPM's when you adjusted the idle? This how I go about adjusting a carburetor on these engines. After the tractor is running I first adjust the idle screw and the stop screw on the back to get the slowest RPM and still can open the throttle wide open without it hesitating. The stop screw on the back sets the idle RPM speed. The idle screw adjusts to make the engine run smooth at its setting. It takes small adjustments to both back and fourth to get where you want it to idle. After Idle is set I open the throttle wide open. I then adjust the power jet to get the fastest RPM. I turn the idle screw in and out slightly to make sure it is at its fastest possible. I then turn the idle screw in until I detect a slight slowing. (slight) That will be as good as it can be adjusted without a dyno. If you have done the adjustment exactly like above and it still runs the same it will be something different than in adjustment. Is it running with black smoke? If you are already here let me know and I will give you other things to check. Edited by Dick L - 27 Jan 2017 at 5:03am |

If you do not have black smoke! The next thing I would do is get the TDC line in the inspection hole center on the compression stroke. The remove the distributor cap. (I am assuming it has a distributor) and dust cover and set the points to .020. Since the engine is running it has to be close to being timed so loosen the distributor lock down clamps. rotate the distributor with the switch on and watch the points spark. When you are sure the points are just about to spark lock down the clamps and try it. Slightly out of time can cause an engine run labored. If by chance you have a magneto you check for the exact timing of spark a little different but still from TDC on the compression stroke. I'll be gone until noon!

Did you put in an inline filter? If not you're probably getting some of the same contamination from the tank you got in the old carb. Also are you running it with the air cleaner hose off? If not try taking the hose off, your air cleaner may be stopped up or you have some H2O in the cup of the air cleaner.

Might not be timing but I would check it in any case. With the black smoke it is not burning all the gas for some reason. When you screw the power jet needle in can you shut the engine down?

When is the last time you tossed a new set of spark plugs in it? Might not be the Carb at all. Could be an ignition or valve issue. One bad plug or one bad wire will do what that engine is doing. A couple tight valves or a bad cam lobe would also do the same. I just had a customer call me with a similar problem. I asked him how old the Ignition switch was. He said it looked like the original. I told him to change it out. That was the culprit. So, ya just never know what kinda goofy stuff that will happen. Sometimes you wind up chasing the wrong thing....

I installed a new key switch when I bought it but didn't do plugs and wires, will pick up a set of each and a valve cover gasket probably won't hurt to do the lash anyway. I just have trouble seeing it the carb being I had two carbs at the same time done buy the same reputable mechanic, and being it's doing the same with two different carbs. The other carb was for a neighbors tractor and it ran like a top.
