    Posted: 30 Dec 2016 at 3:15pm
I built a 3 point set up for my WD this fall to install a snowblower and the bottom arms bolt onto the drawbar mounts fine but for the top link I just had a clevis around the rockshaft that allowed me to at least lift the blower but I couldn't tighten the top link to put any pressure on the blower to angle the cutting edge.
So I got thinking this morning walking around Tractor Supply and about an hour with the welder and I had a new top link mount. U-bolts hold it to the rockshaft and it works great. I didn't like the little U-shaped metal ones I found online as they looked pretty cheap and held the top link pin vertical so you have less movement. Cost me about $35 in materials at Tractor Supply and a few hours.

Maybe I will go into production...Wink

That they do; most of my fabrications are inspired by my either unwillingness or inability to spend the money on the pre-made version.

Could you post pics of the rest of your setup? I am thinking about building my own as well.

I will have to remember this part of your setup as well.

Sure I will grab some pics tomorrow of how I have it set up and the parts I needed to make the top link.

As promised here is how I got the 3 point set up on my WD after some revisions to make it work better.

uploads/14031/WD_3_point_Medium.jpg

uploads/14031/WD_3_point_mount_Medium.jpg

uploads/14031/WD_3_point_mount_bolt_Medium.jpg

In the pics it shows how I just have the 3 point arms bolted to the drawbar mount on each side. I used the back bottom hole and it worked nicely for my snowblower, was a good height and distance out for the pto shaft. The size bolt I needed for the hole in the mount was 3/4. I used a 4 inch long bolt and a steel spacer. I had first set it up with 3 inch long bolts and they will fit through but I set it up this way with the 4 inch bolt to space the arm out away from the drawbar so I could leave my drawbar on without it binding and it set the arms a little wider as when I had the short bolts in the arms would just spread out wide enough to get the blower on so this way the ball joints in the arms don't work at such an extreme angle. To make the 7/8" opening on my lift arms match tight to the 3/4" bolt I used some shoulder bushings Tractor Supply had in their hardware section.

I just then used some flat stock drilled for a 1/2 inch bolt at each end to attach up to the stock 2 point lift arms. Make sure you use grade 8 hardware for everything.

To go over the nice top link in greater detail I built it using various parts I got at Tractor Supply if you have one nearby. The backing plate and u-bolts are trailer suspension replacement hardware. My Tractor Supply stocks "Carry-On" trailer parts and the bolts are the 1/2" u-bolt kit (517T) part number and their "Large Tie Plate" for 5,000+ lb trailers (650T) part number. For the actual mounting flanges with the holes for the top link I bought a stabilizer bar for 3 points that they stock with a 7/8" hole on each end. I cut the ends off with a cut off wheel on an angle grinder and welded them to the backing plate. I have a 220 volt arc welder, I don't think a 110 volt will penetrate that thick of steel far enough to be strong.

The tie plate kit comes with two plates so I just welded them together since I had them both for added strength. Then just u-bolt it to the rockshaft and you are in business. Affordable and easy to build WD 3-point.

Let me know if you have any questions or I missed anything.

How well does that strap prevent the side to side movement? Do you have issues with it being too tight when you raise the arms?

I was thinking about bolting a 3pt draw bar in front of the bail on my existing draw bar and attaching the 3pt arms to it and then chain to connect the arms to the existing hydraulic arms. The only problem I have yet to figure out is how to prevent the arms from moving side to side while still allowing them to move up and down.

The strap I just threw on to limit movement on the arms because I haven't had a chance to get the chains set up yet but I will be doing stabilizer chains as the strap only helps a little. I just have to get the holes drilled with my plan being to bolt the stabilizer chains to the bottom of my rear platform. That way they are mounted higher than the 3 point so they will be tight and stable when the implement is down and will get looser and you raise to the don't bind when you lift the arms.

Since you won't have down pressure anyway, chains would probably be fine for the lifts between the arms and rams. On our old WD on the farm that we had these arms on for a while we did use the method you talked about with a 3 point drawbar bolted to the existing drawbar used to mount the arms. It worked okay but you have to get some flat steel to run stabilizers from the outside of the crossbar you put on to another point on the drawbar to keep it from rotating. I find the way I have it set up on my WD now that it was a lot less work to set up and much less sloppy.

I broke a top link once, and thank gawd I had a log chain with, used it to finish what I was doing and made it back home o-k that way. I also use a chain held by 2-3 short heavy tarp straps to hold the 3-pt arms in and they can still give a bit for up/down movement. kink the hooks so they don't unhook from the chain.

I was planning to use some flat bar to go from the outside of the 3pt draw bar to the front pin that hold the wd's drawbar. I don't have a snap coupler, so I have a bolt up front.

My thought was I could take my stabilizer chain back to the center of the 3pt draw bar. That was the arms and chain pivot at the same point. I wouldn't think I would have the chain bind that way.

Plus, I still have use of traction boost if I ever pull the box scraper.

Nice work, but the only thing that I can see missing is the pins in the bail brackets and the bail.  Why don't you have the pins in there?  Just above where you put the arms, what you call the drawbar mount.  The way it is, if you use the drawbar, all the pull is going to the snap-coupler hook.  Not a good idea I think....

The other side has the pin in, I just took that one out to install the longer bolt and get a better picture. It is back in for next summer when I drop the blower and use the draw bar again. I don't have a snap coupler but it would be just as hard on the front pin....good eye catching that!

I didn't think the bail did the pulling? I thought that the bolt up front did all the work when using the drawbar? The bail just adjusted the height of the bar?

This is exactly what I was planning to try. Thanks for the pictures. What length of lift arms did you use?

Replied to your message on some specifics of my setup. I will get the arms measured and let you know the length. They are old Massey Harris 50 arms we had at the farm.
