6080 opinions/advice

that is about 7000 lbs of weight to pull around, you hit a hill at road speed and it will bog down.

70xx not an option. I've got a 7020 that I thought would work pretty good but he'll have no part of it. He says he hates getting in and out and can't see nearly as well out of the cab.
Not gonna argue with him, after all, it's his money not mine.

I think it would be a good load behind it. If it's not shifted just right, you'll also miss a gear. I dont know if the drawbar is heavy enough either, I know mines not. I think they were made thick on the later ones, or could be my imagination.....

I have a 500 gallon 3 pt sprayer that I run on my 8070 FWA, and I wouldn't want a smaller tractor on it. I have had it on my 7060 before, but it pushes that tractor around more than I like. Darrel

How many more years before you can make the decisions? ( I mean that in a nice way, when he retires…then you can call the shots.) Be very careful on the wording if your having this conversation with him. You still want his help but you need to follow your own decisions (passions).

And can you wait until then?

He might live to 87 and still want to call the shots.

I've been in the same situation.   Wanted something bigger, better, but father wasn't interested.   Finally, went ahead with my own money (when I saved enough).   Wow! Wished I would of done it sooner. Made life so much easier.

My father wouldn't say it, but I'm sure he could see the advantage in the upgrades.

If you're running a farm and not a hobby, ideally, get a 7-8000 series. (or whatever tractor with a cab that's newer and bigger {6 cylinder} that you can afford.)

I've looked into Agco's line under 100 hp but they are still kinda pricy and there again I know nothing about them.

We have all been there Leon. And you have a great Leader there. Heck of a guy !!!!!

We have 2-6080s. A 2wd open station and a 4wd cab tractor. Both are 85 models with the heavier draw bar. I pull a 10 row 7100 Deere planter on a cart that weighs probably 6-7000# with the 2wd and it handles it fine. They are a heck of a tractor for the size. We put more hours on them than any of the others. The cabs are not as big as an 8000 series and a little louder but still nice. Just be aware of the pto and engine thrust bearing issues and you will be fine. They are a good compromise if you don't want to spend the $ for an 80xx.

Most of your replies so far have barrels of bad information. We pulled a Hardi HC 650 with a 6080 for 10 years roughly. Normally filled it to 600 gallons since that worked out well for a "batch". Unless you lots of very major hills you will be fine. We have a couple substantial hills and just plan and hit them when we are a little emptier not a biggie.   We have since sold the sprayer and went to a Rogator.   

They shift perfectly fine when shifting within the ranges. Some of our fields are 12 plus miles from home.

This year I used our 6080 to pull a 1000 gallon 28 applicator and it did fine.   Honestly more enjoyable than using the 7000.

Someone mentioned they felt 500 was to much for that size tractor we pulled a 500 gallon sprayer with a D17 and survived.

Uh, yeah there Victory. I am the bad en that brought up the 500 gallon sprayer thing. For some reason I thought he was talking about a 3 pt hitch sprayer. After I posted, I re-read the original post later on and realized that I had made a terrible mistake, and that he had actually said "pull type". Two complete different animals. My bad. Darrel

Darrel Daehler, Lonn, and Ranger are the ones I have the most doubts in.   In my mind you have a track record of good advice.   Your reply surprised me.    500 gallons on the 3pt would be a trip they are super light on the nose.

What did I say that isn't true? The 7000 series is much cheaper generally and is every bit as reliable as an 8000 series. I really have no input towards a 6000 series as I have never owned one. I have repaired the hydraulic pump on one 25 years ago. Now I gotta go back and see what I exactly said and see if I got to pull my foot out of my mouth.

Agree with the weight issue, it will handle it but I would want a full rack of front weights and fluid in the rears for traction in hills. They have an ideal pto setup for spraying. Used to pull a 500 gallon 45' sprayer with an open 6080. Visibility was terrific but again it had front weights and loaded 18.4x34's.
