Hoping someone on here has had experience with these engines. We have a Versatile 145 and we were told when we bought it this spring that it had a crate engine, Cummins V504 installed with maybe 600hours on it, but putting coolant in oil. Well, we have it partially tore down, found bad oring on sleeve. And the sleeves look like they have 5000 hours on them. So, I'm guessing it was a used engine, that came in a crate. Lol.
Trying to find a Data plate to verify if it's a 504, or the original 470... Does anyone know where it might be? Book showed me where it should be, but it's not there. Guessing it's long gone. Any other features this would have to verify its a 504? Once I get the other head off I will measure the stroke and that'll tell me too. But would be nice to find a tag so I know the serial number for ordering parts. Figured it's worth a shot checking the knowledge on here. Thank you, Carl |

Id extend the frame and hood and install an N/A 250hp 855 before i wasted any money on those. Guy in kansas has done lots of 145's this way. You essentially get an 800 versatile after your done.

I've heard of people doing that, but I guess I didn't have many complaints about the 504, ran smooth and had good power, even for being worn out.

A 145 is not nearly as bullet proof as an 800/850.

Is there anything in the world that is harder quit on than an old machine. Your dog or horse will die but an old machine like that keeps calling till you answer. If the riveted on stamped plate is gone from the engine you got a problem but you may be able to find someone with the same engine in the same tractor to help you find some useable numbers to go from. You probably know that Cummins uses a CPL number and I have been told it stands for custom parts listing. They used to always ask for that number but lately they just want the serial number at the Cummins dealers. Good Luck!!

They want cpl when doing pumps.
As to the 145 vs 800 longevity. They've been sticking low hp 855s in for quite some time in 145s. They are built stout. |

Before I'd put a great big ole 855 in a 145, I'd really consider an 8.3. Maybe it's just me, but a 145 is just way too small of a tractor for an 855 lol! It is cool that someone is putting them in there though. I've only worked on a couple 145's, 25 years ago, and they were hardly used anymore, and still had the 470 small vee.

I thought 145s were kinda collectible? I would fix the original myself.

Tranny and drivelines in a 145 weren't built for an 855...You can buy a whole 800 tractor for about 6000 dollars

The original engine was a V470, I guess they would completely garbage, so most were all repowered with v504's, and that is our plan, rebuild the 504. Looks almost identical to a 470.
Ed tracked down all the parts for us to rebuild it and the block, crank, cam, and heads are going to machine shop this week. |
