   explanations, why some D series tractors have the by-pass line around the thermostat,,,and some don't,,,?? I figure AC had a good reason way back then, but the reason eludes me at this point.
   My thinkin is,, if a particular engine tends to run hot, or you are really workin the tractor hard,,,the radiator will not be able to hold the coolant in the "cooling zone" long enough to properly cool it down,,,with the line bypassing the coolant around the thermostat.   THAT engine that tends to run hot,,, will run even hotter with the bypass,,!  An "un-by-passed" thermostat insures the coolant has the necessary "residence time" in radiator to properly cool the engine.
 When you have a fresh rebuilt engine with new rings,  bearings etc, etc, all those friction points are causing a slight increase in operating temperature,,VS an engine with many running hours is "looser" and would run "not as hot",,,right,,,??,,, What am I missing,,,???

On a serious note, My EARLy d17 doesn't have that.  Maybe it was just to the smaller D series ones?  Mine doesn't hardly get warm!  Don't know if it has a thermostat in it or not.  Haven't had a reason to look yet.  Now that I say that, watch out........gonna boil over next time I use it..........

   Yeah, Ted,,I've seen some "with" the bypass and some "without" and there have been some posts here askin bout yea or nay,,??,,but I couldn't find the posts and don't remember that the question ever got resolved,,,,,Wink
 I ain't tryin ti re-invent the wheel on this one Guys,,,but since I can't find a good used housing,,I'm goin to build one,,,!! Since I had already fabbed a 4 bolt block off plate for the head, I'm gonna go ahead and use a 1 1/2" X 1" concentric weld reducer and weld it on the block off plate,,,and I'M IN,,,!!!! I'll just need to machine a slight cut for the thermostat. I bought a 160° thermostat for a 70's 350 Chevy Trk and am goin to install it on this A/C,,and am reasonably certain it will keep thet 149 cool even when hard at work.ClapClap

You only want a 160 degree thermostat if you are using alcohol based antifreeze. You want 180 for modern antifreeze. The engine will also run more efficiently with the 180 thermostat than with the 160 because it looses head to the cooling system faster when the coolant is colder. For efficiency 280 would be better but coolants that won't boil below 280 are way more expensive than water and glycol based antifreeze.

Supposedly the bypass allowed the engine to warm up faster. Can't tell you how it does that.

    Hey Ted,,,,since the coolant on these tractors does not run thru a heating coil in a heater,,,,,Wink,,it would sorta be a moot point on how quick you want the engine to warm up,,,right,,??  My concern is,,the by-pass line allows approximately 1/3 of the total coolant volume being circulated,,to go directly from hot engine to hot cylinder head and on and on and on,round and around,,,with no cooling happening to it,,,,?? I will say this,,,I have seen some older FORD engines that had the same by-pass line,,,but no recent ones,,,,WinkWink
