   Starting with the 40's and moving forward to the 70's which of the big Allis Crawlers do you guys think was the most reliable and easiest to maintain?  

This question includes the Allis, GM and Buda Engined Machines.  Just curious what your thougths are.

I kinda like the Fiat Allis FD 5 and the Allis HD6's as well as the H-3's.

	it is not a big machine but i am partial to the hd5b. easy 2 cylinder detroit to maintain, direct drive, easy to manuver. only issue, i wish i had salt tracks as mine are getting snakey and like to come off. not the easiest to adjust the tracks but for a 1940's machine, it is very durable. parts are plentiful (used ones anyway) and it just keeps going. a little ether when it is cold and it starts everytime.

	As I have owned my HD5G since 1972 (1955 mfg.) I know it well in how it runs and works. I have done things that larger machines can't do like dig under existing houses for new foundations. I have had 2 other 5G machines as well as a HD5B so know the undercarrage well. Good track is the key to any machine. The FD5 F/A I also own is 4 times the machine the older units are but being 33 years further advanced in technology does that. When the HD5 was introduced in 1947/48 it set a new standard for crawlers with the 5G having a intigrated hyd. loader that worked smooth and well. It set a new threshold for equipment and gave CAT a good run for it's life in advancing their equipment. The HD6 uses many of the same components as the 5, in fact rear casting, track and finals are all the same .

	I am looking a a 11B, trying to justify it even as the price is good and FA parts are still somewhat available. Big crawler, about the same as a D6 Cat. Would rather get a loader but they get cost prohibitive by demand.

	We have an HD-6 and an HD-3. Before we bought the HD-6, I looked at a CAT D-4 with direct electric start but was advised to look at the HD-6. I was told the AC in many ways was a better tractor. When you look at the ease to remove and install clutches and brakes , the engine either Detroit or Allis/Buda, direct electric start, and sealed rollers in oil. The AC crawlers from 1946 on are a better choice as the crawlers were built using the individual component construction process, (HD-5, HD-9, HD-11, etc. I like the HD-6. The HD-3 is too light for any serious work, but it is light and easy to move around for the shows. The HD-6 on the other hand is too heavy to move around to the various events, so it depends on what you want to do. Play-HD-3, HD-4. Work -HD-6 or bigger.

	Too all the guys that posted above, very much appreciate your comments! I was thinking of using the H-3's just to push topsoil that had been dropped from a dump truck. As far as moving heavy material with small boulders I am thinking either the FD -5 or the HD 6 is the machine that I should set my sights on. By the way do any of you guys know if the HD 6 and HD -9's have any parts in common. What size trailer and truck are you guys using to move the venerable HD-6's with? I am thinking at least a 10 ton tri axle trailer with a minimum one ton truck. But maybe a tonner truck would be too small, not sure.

	My bare HD-6E is a long under carriage without dozer . It weighs 15, 600 over the scale with 20" pads. The dozer adds 2440# for straight dozer and 3000# for an angle dozer. The new 1 ton Ford is rated for 18,000# utilizing a goose neck trailer and load. I have been doing the math, but a one ton dually will not do it safely. The HD-4 and HD-5 are a little lighter and will work with the one ton truck and a stout 5th wheel. According to the book, the HD-9 and HD-15 share parts.

	i believe my hd5 w/ 8' blade weighs 6 tons. loader about 9-10 tons. a one ton truck may be a little light to stop, depends how the trailer is set up. i believe the hd6 had longer track frames than the 5 and i know that they had bigger engines. either 3-71s or 4 cyl buda. the hd5g loaders had 37 track links with 5 bottom rollers which is what the hd6 dozers had i think. there will be very few parts the same between hd5&6 and the hd9. maybe 9s & 11s will have some parts in common. i am told norm swinfords a/c construction book is very insightful for this. i have had my eye on one for awhile but they are out of print and expensive. hope this helps.

	I have an H-3 with a 1090 blade. It is too lite for serious dozing. H-4's and the later 653's were a very good crawler and popular in this area.

	My HD-5G weighs right at 17000 pounds, on a local scale, (2-71 motor) if it is any help.

	Wouldn't pull anything bigger than an HD3,4, 650's with a one ton. Brakes aren't big enough.

	Hello Again Guys: Wow, all good information above!! I am glad you guys mentioned the weights and brake angle. I don't want to be truckin down the highway and run through an Intersection with the load of Allis Orange or Yellow Construction Iron on the back. The safety aspect is definitely something that has to be considered. Appreciate the comments. Guess, I had better be thinking about the long term replacement of my Ford Diesel 3/4 ton if I go with the bigger Iron like an HD-6 or FD - 5. Hope you guys are having a Great Fall, the colors are looking great, just like all the AC's.
