I was hoping someone could chime in to explained what could be wrong with my ac-wd. Here are the symptoms:
I can use the foot clutch to stop the tractor and shift gears. When I let the clutch out, the tractor will move briefly forward or backward (maybe 6 inches) and then stop and won't go any further. I've tried repeatedly pressing the brakes and nothing happens. I've greased the throw out bearing. I then have to pull back the hand clutch to get the tractor to go. Also, the free play is currently at 1 3/4 inch. I haven't had much time to work on it. Could the excessive free play cause this, or is something else going on? It works fine with the hand clutch. Thanks. I'm new to tractors. |

That's how the tractor is supposed to work. These tractors have 2 cluches to give live PTO. You must release the foot clutch and pull back on the hand clutch to drive. If you push on the hand clutch the tractor will stop but the PTO will keep turning. (But the reality is that usually the hand clutch drags a little, and you have to push the breaks a little to stop the tractor when the hand clutch is released.)

Dave is right on the money! Your tractor sounds like it is working as it should.
We now need some pictures. Most of the time I have to push the foot clutch in to get the tractor into a different gear. Doing that stops the hydraulics and PTO and forward motion. Regards, Chris |

Since you are new to the tractor, I strongly recommend getting an operator's manual for the tractor. It will tell you everything you need to know about it. Manuals are readily available on e-bay and some vendors here carry them. They don't cost much and they are a wealth of information.

You thought applying the brakes would help it to move?
