80-90 in the transmission itself or better yet use modern trans hydraulic oil.   Can use the trans hydraulic in the power director and hydraulics too....that way if you develop a leaky internal seal or blow an internal hose you're not going to mix different oil types.

Isn't the trans hydraulic oil much lighter than 80-90?

Book calls for 80-90 in the trans, rear end and finals.
I like to use 80-90 in my 45. I think it sticks to the gears better if it gets hot.
Modern tractors use Hyd fluid everywhere and a lot of guys use that instead of gear oil in these old tractors. Really both are probably fine but I prefer to use the 80-90

I am with Dave I use the 80-90 there was a service bulletin at one point that states you should use hydraulic oil in the transmission but I find it makes them louder and I just feel better with 80 90 weight gear oil on my big gears. As to the weight questions yes hydraulic oil is 20 weight oil with additives much thinner then gear oil.

I use hydr oil. No problems

Oh and as to the leaking issue I sort of figured if I pull the rearend or torque tube dipstick and the oil is mixed and wrong it will tell me quickly what is wrong. The common leak problem with these that I have heard of is the hose to the lift cylinder breaking and filling the rearend with hydraulic oil. If it where mine and I was loosing hydraulic oil I would want to know before it just started leaking out of the rearend from being over full. Mixed oil will show up on a dipstick. Just my two cents.

Allis-Chalmers officially changed recommendation to 821 trans-hydraulic oil after it came out.  Guess they thought it was better than the gear lube.  And don't just use regular hydraulic oil either, use the stuff that's compatible with the 821.
