 Topic: 80R knife head.

Hello, folks! I have a model 80R (i think) sickle mower. I broke the knife head a few years ago and the mower has sat ever since. It broke while mowing and it was welded back together. It broke again putting the knifehead back on the cutterbar. I'm trying to get it running again as a summer project and I need a new knife head. does anyone know a good place to get parts from? I also need a belt and tail wheel.
one other question I have is what is the best travel speed? I had it running on the 4510 at full throttle going at about 2 MPH. any faster and it will ball up the mower. any advice?

don't quote me but I'd bet it should be run at 540 pto speed,not wide open....might have something to do with the broken head

When we mowed hay with sickle bar haybines we always ran about 1700 rpm which is probably like 450 on the PTO? Maybe we could've ran faster, but it was Grandpa's haybine and that's what he said to do. It's worked well, and I don't think speeding up really helped any.

The head breaks because something else is wrong. Check all of the bearings in the connecting arms.

I should have a good used one. Too many RPMs, dull knife, worn out ledger plates, improper adjusted ware plates, improper adjusted hold downs, and speed cause brokerage. MACK

I second a bad bearing. Dad always said a bearing going out would snap the head off. Also agree with Mack. You should be able to run 4-5 mph at 3/4 throttle.

Our 80R was completely rebuilt by dad before he died, so it is in really nice (new) condition. I never run more than 1/3 throttle as it never needs more no matter how thick /tall whatever I am mowing. Anything more sounds as if the sickle bar would fly off.

If you can shake the cross arms up and down much at all the bearings are worn.Also the original cast sickle heads break easy anyway the ones from Webbs Sickle Service are much stronger.The sickles on AC Twin Wheel Drive mowers need to be kept very sharp if not you're going to have problems.Also those mowers can't take running the PTO at 540 RPM I can tell you that from personal experience.

serrated.
@gary there is quite a bit of slop in the connecting rods. I see new bearings in my future.

In all the years we mowed hay with a sickle mower no one every ran more than half throttle to mow. Proper set up with sharp edges makes for a LOT easier mowing, not fighting the thing all day.

The large rear bearing on the gearbox are pretty cheap and can be found easily the bearings on the cross arms are aircraft bearings and last i priced were around $70 each.

My 80-r cut really nice this spring, after new sections from webbs! I was never more than 2/3 throttle on my WD-45.

ours is ran at 2/3 throttle max thats only to pick up a little ground speed in alfalfa. mower runs the best at about half throttle . key thing good ledgerplates and clips and sharp sections, and a pump of grease in the cross arm bearings every couple hours . second or third gear with the wd depending on grass or alfalfa with that being said it will do a job that looks like you went in a done it with your lawn mower

quick question on bearings. if I extract the old ones, could I maybe run them over to napa or grainger and get replacements? Or would I have to track down some new ones fromsomewhere else?
