Hey everyone. I had a question regarding the hoods/ exhaust placement on the U. I've seen many with the side exhaust, and I've seen some with both holes in the hood where the breather and exhaust run through. My particular tractor is a 1936 and is done this way. Was there a switch in the years when the U started doing this?

according to the parts book, the front dump exhaust or through the hood was used on engine #'s prior to UMA-10090. the front exit was for gasoline and the center exit for for heating low grade fuels. two different manifolds used. an early style then changed at UMA 1386 up to the change to center only at 10090. I cant say what that corresponds in years. i have the later style but need to check my engine #

I do know that this is a dual fuel tractor. I wonder if it's similar to the unstyled Wc. When burning kerosene you have to swap the exhaust plates out. And visa versa. I wonder if it's the same for the u. If burning gasoline to use the front dump and kerosene to use the side

I believe you are right The front exhaust is for gas and the center for kerosene The center directs all exhaust gases out around the intake tube to preheat the fuel

I'm not positive on that though. I just know that the manifold on mine is set up to go through the hood and also has the starting tank spot to the side. I see a lot of restored I'd with the side exhaust and no place through the hood to run a pipe through it. Maybe this was strictly a dual fuel thing.

the later ones didnt have hole in hood because the manifold has a chamber you flip to heat low grade fuels. My U is this way has kero engine # and low comp pistons with center dump manifold. its a 37

Hmm. I wonder if there is a way to see what engine #'s correspond with years. Mine is a 36 with the 5.2l engine with both exits on the manifold. Just curious really

Would a g code engine on a 1936 have a hood with the spots for a starting fuel tank? G I know is for gasoline. I guess it's not a dual fuel?

Hoods were also changed when the air filters changed from vortex to Donaldson.
