So the chances of me buying a U have just increased! I'm looking at one about 4 hours away. It's a 1936 on rubber and it runs. I know the U had the Continental engine, Waukesha UM and the Allis UM engines. How could I identify if it has the Allis or the Waukesha made engine? Wasn't the Allis engine more powerful?

From the owner now he confirmed that it is the later um engine with the 4.5" stroke. How much power did it make?

In late 36, it went from a 300ci to a 318ci. The 318 was never tested at Nebraska but it should be in the mid 50's on hp.

Congrats on your new purchase. I have a 37 U and a37 UC. Pretty cool old tractors but not much for operator comfort. It takes a while to get used to the hand brake. You can stomp on the floorboard all you want, there ain't no brake pedal there. You 4 hours east or west of Illinois? I'm in east-central Mo.

Did the 36 have the hand brakes? I thought there was a change at some point when they went to foot but I'm probably wrong lol. I live about 45 minutes north of Springfield in Pleasant Hope. So it would be 4-4.5 hours southwest of Illinois. I'm used to the handbrakes. I have a 36 WC too

unless its an industrial with brakes on each side it will have 1 lever to activate a brake on the bevel gear shaft.
