Put the final drive with the rebuilt hand clutch back on (CA tractor). Put the rim/tire back on. Proceeded to drop a nut down into the hand clutch side final drive. Is this something I have to go after? It was a small nut (5/16). Or do you think I need to pull that drive and fish it out? It went down into the hand clutch hole--not the brake drum hole.

Was thinking exactly what DIYDAVE said. Seems like a magnetic tool would track the same as the nut....

I'd take it apart and retrieve it. Hate for that one little nut to mess up my new clutch.

AJ, I know you are right. I'll try to magnet it tomorrow and then pull the drive.

At least it's just the final drive. I had to take a whole tractor back apart to repaint it. Lesson learned the hard way.

First I would try a wire with a bend in the end and go fishing for it. Some days you can get lucky.

try a big magnet on the outside and see if you can make it climb back up where you can get ahold of it with a wire or another magnet.

Steve,
Couple other long shots. I assume there is no oil in this chamber but I dont know? 1. Take a small flexible tube, and duct tape to your shop vac. 2. Use air pressure to blow the nut into a position you can grab with an magnet? 3. sticky tape on the end of a wire Hey I said they weer long shots.:) Seen a young man drop a 1/4-20 short bolt into the flywheel opening on a tractor the other day. I think we may just leave it there too. Regards, Chris |

hmm.. PITA but...
this is easy....just lift tractor, turn upside down, shake until the nut falls out... helps if you have a red 'S' on your chest..... cut me some slack....for me today is the 3rd ! 'Monday' this week.... Jay |

Hey Steve,,,you done the right thing,,,cause let me tell you even the littlest bolt, nut can do terrible damage,,,,, years ago, we had a Buick Electra that I was doin a carb kit on and one of the bolts on the btm of the dang Quadra-jet didn't get tightened ,,,,,,,and the thing fell into the manifold,,,and found it's way right to the top of the # 6 piston and one of the valves drove it into the side and cracked the top two ring lands,,,,VERY expensive repair,,,,!!!!! ![]() |

I'm really happy for you too ! Sure, maybe, you could have left it in there, but a month from now....clunk, grind, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... you KNOW that little nut would have caused you a LOT of grief.
Treat it as a 'learning experience'... next time.... drop the bolt !! Jay |

Steve,
Always amazed at your work and documentation! I give you extra credit for getting it back apart and retrieving the nut. Even when you aren't going for show quality, the tractors you do look very good! Expecting to see pictures of a little D series soon too! regards, Chris |

Yup glad you got it out... I agree with the tires so I have a pair of really ruff cracked tires on my d15 but they came with the tractor and where new left outside in the sun for years. Can't bring myself to throw them away too much tread to waste....

This is a bit late since you already retrieved it and I am not sure how big the opening is, but could a shop vac suck it back out of where it fell in?

I was thinking if he placed a magnet on the clutch pack, would it sucked up the nut and retrieved it top side by rotating the clutch?
or threaded a wire under the clutch and then put the magnet in a plast ic bag and hook the wire to it and then pulled the bag down and around under the clutch and hoped it would grab the nut. Guess I would have tried blowing it out, Had a clearance light come out of the socket on a 92 f250 and fall down inside, amber bulb behind clear lense... looked awful... tried to fish it out but couldn't get anything in there that would grab it. so I took the air hose and aimed it from the edge and gave it some air and presto, it came flying out and hit some metal and broke. but it was out. LOL |

The clearance is really tight--so tight I couldn't really get anything by the clutch. I really worried about the nut working it's way toward the brake drum, which isn't a perfect circle, and wedging between the drum/clutch and final drive casting. It could have caused some serious damage.

Yep, the what if's are what cost the most $$$$$$$$$!
Now that you have it all apart, it gives you a chance to clean all the rust and gunk out of that final. Good job to date Steve!! MORE PICS!! |
