Bought a 7040 at auction and the powering steering lags. you turn the wheel and then the wheels will turn slowly. I this a power steering pump problem? New to the 7040 so not sure what I'm looking at.
Thanks |

Check the left side filter to be sure that the screen is there. Also, jack the front end up, remove the steering hoses, and be sure that there isn't anything in the front spindle area that is binding on the power steering.

The gear pump (middle) runs power steering. There is a plug on the middle pump that takes a 11/4 wrench. Remove nut, next a cap, spring, orffic plate(small flat washer with a small hole) then the spool valve. The spool may be stuck in housing. Get it out and polish it up.
Check left filter in rearend housing. Screen may be missing or worst filter pluged with metal.
Hope this helps. If not let us know. MACK

what is suggested to polish the spool valve? I picked up a 7040 with sluggish steering that I need to correct.

My 7050, when I first bought it, turned like wrestling a bear. The right spindle had no grease zerk and I had to beat the spindle out with a 16# mall by first fighting to pull the axle from the tube and turning it upside down and putting back in tube, mine was just packed with dirt......... yada yada yada long story short, check that the spindle isn't stuck from lack of grease.

I use 2000 grit, same as you would use for wet sanding paint. Very important you must use it wet. I usually sand things like that in the solvent tank.
