Looking for a trick to breaking tire bead

   Had the day off today so one of my projects was to replace the tubes in the tires on my WD45 diesel as one leaks down really fast and the other one is a slow leaker.  Took a couple tire spoons and got the beads broke off of the fast leaker and replaced the tube relatively easy.   Tried working on the other one and the rim bead is all rusty and did not get that one off the bead.  I have a short temper so I gave it a rest and put it back in the barn and did some other projects for the rest of the day.  I was going to buy a bead breaker tool like the one at Gemplers but I forgot they are $175.   Does anyone else have any good ideas?   I have three weights on each side so I was trying to do this without taking the tire and all the weights off if I don't have to, but if I don't have any better ideas, I will have to go that route and pull it off and use the truck and ramp trick.  Thanks for any help.

	I spent 2 hours the other night trying to break the very rusty bead on the tire off my Speed Patrol, tried the ramp trick all the way around both sides with no luck. Today I took it in town and 20 minutes and $30 later it was apart. Money well spent if the wheel is off the tractor.

	I've done a bunch of em and the best advice I can give anyone who will be doing more than a few, is to spring for a Bead-Cheeta. Looks like a lot of $$$ up front, but it will break any bead I've run into. Tires that have not been on the tractor very long (20 years) will come off with the ramp trick and loader pressure, but if you get an old timer, these methods do not work. (We once parked a 730 JD rear on a 13.6X38 tire for a week..no budge). And, do leave the wheel on the tractor. With very little practice, you'll discover that gravity is the tire changers friend. 	If you know someone with a frontend loader,take the cutting edge of bucket if it is not to sharp straight down next to the rim across the tire (CAREFULLY),Expecially if the tire is old and weathered.Maybe even try just the corner edge side of the bucket also up close to the rim.With the weight of the tractor and down pressure of the hydralics I have broke the bead loose.And I have also punched a hole in a sidewall,Darn it, thats why I stress CAREFULLY. Do this on a good flat solid surface. Have someone watching that cutting edge and the bead closely that you don't damage the rim also. I have had good luck with this method a few times. 	Haven't found a bead yet that my I-600 backhoe couldn't break.....had the tractor bridged between the front bucket and hoe before a couple broke loose tho.....

	I generally use a woodsplitting maul and sledgehammer to get between the bead and rim, then use another maul as a wedge to start breaking the bead around the rim, then alternate them as I go. It's cheap and it works! My 2 cents.

	I have a big wedge that is made specially for breaking tires,takes a lot of hammer work,and maybe some smaller tools to get it started but it'll get the job done,cost about $35 years ago

	+1 on the Bead-Cheeta. I got one from gemplers a few years back - when it was the military spec american made one, not the import. Have not found a tire yet that it wont break down. Also picked up what was called tyrepliers from gemplers years back that work slick on 18 inch and smaller rims but I dont think they are made anymore.

	I agree with MNLonnie. I took one of the wheels off my D17D that is surely an original and paid $30 as well. The only aggravation was getting the wheel off the tractor and loaded on my trailer. I'll bet that wheel and tire, loaded with fluid, was nearly 1,000 lbs. The tire shop said they had to use a tow truck to lift it up off the trailer. For $30, I'll happily pay someone else, who likely has the proper tools, to deal with the frustration.

	A good tire shop can do it right on the tractor if you just take it up there, or even on the farm if you want to pay the service call.

	I do the same as Bob, take my front end loader, turn the edge of the bucket down, and use the corner to break the bead. Have changed a dozen or so tires, never done any damage to any of them.

	I rolled the tires/rims under a tree and used a come-a-long to winch it up in the air, then backed the trailer under it and took it to the tire shop.

	Here's the way I do it: 1) take wheel off and lay it on ground (face up) 2) after removing the valve core from the tube, take your pickup truck or another tractor and (very carefully) drive over the rubber part of the tire without driving on the rim. if your pickup has fancy wheels or hubcabs, make sure they will not be damaged by the tractor rim when the pickup breaks the bead loose and goes to the ground. you may have to stop at the high point and give the pickup time to break it loose. if it sticks with the pickup on it, take a sledge or tire tool and gently persuade it off. 3) turn the wheel over and do the other side. 4) take the $30 (or whatever), save an extra trip to town, and take your wife/girlfriend out to dinner.
	Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

	I've used a jack all between the tire and the two point hitch arm before with the power of leverage it seems to work very well.

	I welded a old culivator shovel on a old stell fence post 3 1/2 or 4 ft long and use that with a fence post dirver. work that around the bead back and forth on maybe a 1/3 of the way around and they come off. leaving the wheel on the tractor makes it much easier as others have stated.

	My super easy super secret trick is to stop by the local tire shop and borrow their slide hammer bead breaker. They gladly loan me the bead breaker and tire spoons to keep from having to work on tractor tires. I buy my tubes, and all my vehicle tires from him as well.

	A tire hammer for truck tires works as well as a slide hammer, tire hammer is duck billed hammer with handle but is struck with sledge to break hard frozen beads. WD40 sprayed onto bead area also will make it come off easier. And when all else fails, driving over rubber wiith crawler works also, backhoe teeth do put holes in tire sidewalls, have a nice 13/80 R 20 without a mate to prove it.
