if you do happen to pull the pto shaft out, make sure the front of the tractor is sitting down in a hole or ditch, otherwise all the rear end oil will be in your lap! another great design from JD!!!

There is a cheap fix, drain out all the transmittion oil with the big plug in the bottom of rear end housing, remove the six bolts holding the pto housing on, pull the pto shaft out of housing, and replace a seal in the pto housing. Not a bad job, just have to remove rear end oil and then replace it when done.

Actually you swap shaft extensions. Bolted on a flange connection to change speed in a 3010. In a 3020 you swap shafts. There should be the other flanged shaft extension stored somewhere back there. You have to be sure to turn the shafts so the gears can shift when you change one way. There's a rod in the center of the shaft that you don't change that shifts the gears in the transmission case to shift the PTO speed. Its pushed in by one of the extensions and the other extension is drilled so it doesn't push the shaft in. If you force it without turning the shaft so the gears can shift, you break things.
It's crucial to keep the flange bolts tight or it will leak and it will break stuff. In the 3020, the spare shaft is stored just above the PTO outlet with the spline pointed to the left. There you change the shaft by taking loose a big snap ring each place. Nose down is a good idea either way. Gerald J. |
