Boy do I feel stupidShocked After fixing the pin hole in the tower, re-cutting the slot in the shifter, and making a new pin, https://plus.google.com/photos/101907304795732239945/albums/5795827044463731425
I found the problem. Somewhere along the line the interlock pin got lost in the 3rd and 4th gear rail. So if you weren't real careful, you could shift into 1st and 3rd at the same time and when you went back to neutral, you could very easily leave it in one gear while taking it out of the other.
 Now all I have to do is get those stinkin balls and springs back in place and re-wire the set screws. Oh yea, and make a gasket for the tower cause I had blue RTV on it beforeLOL

Reading about the WC shifters reminded me about a White truck I drove some 50 years ago when I was twenty. It was the 3000 model if I remember right, the one we called a beer barrel on wheels. It was a cab-over and the cab was kinda round. The linkage to the transmission would wear and get "SLOPPY". To get into third gear, I would have to raise my right leg up, pull it into the notch, and then get my foot back on the gas. Made for an uncomfortable ride!!!!!
And that Mustang 135 hp gas motor, lordy, what power!!!
You don't really have to be smart if you know who is!

The tower is back together and seems to shift OK. It's hard to go thru the positions when it's laying upside down in a vise with an old pair of farmer gloves insulating it from the viseWacko

Charlie, I have fixed all of my G's that way. Makes it real easy to put it in any gear with no problem. Made me a fixture to hold the gear shift lever parallell to vise jaws when machining them.Tracy Martin

I used the vee blocks to set it parallel to the vice. Had a hard time clamping it and ended up shimming the right side .010. I just used the ole eyeball to square up the bottom of the groove. I thought it might be hard to do the tower hole but I just set it on a 1/2 inch parallel and clamped the flange of the tower to the back of the vice. It was a little far away from the work and was a little flexible because the flange is so thin, but I didn't have to do anything but go from the 1/4 inch hole to a 5/16 and part of that was already gone. Should have had the camera there when I did the tower.
