I recently aquired a 51r gleaner and was wondering if anyone could help me with the serial number.  Under model it says 51R and under serial number it says 51R8073.  In my parts book it seperates allot of 51,52 years from later because of the ford engine (which I have).  I did see parts in the book for 53-6001 to 54-7999, and lists for 55-8000 and up.  My question is how and mine be 51-8073.  If the first two numbers are the year and the last four the production number.  Is there a book or somewere I can look up a gleaner serial number.  Maybe one of you and can explain my numbered confusion.  Im thinking I got something pretty rare?

Looking at the 1951 and 1952 parts books, it appears there were two ranges of serial numbers.  The 1952 parts book has two footnotes labeled (A) and (B):

(A) Used on 1952 Model A and R machines numbered from 3001 to 4250 inclusive

(B) Used on all 1951 machines and on 1952 Model A and R machines numbered from 8001 to 9205 inclusive

The way I interpret that is there was a change in the numbering scheme sometime in 1952 at which time they moved from the 8001-9205 range down to the 3001+ range.  My guess is that concurred with some major design changes which are mentioned in the 1953 parts book (clutch, separator, shoe, among others).

Yes, you don't see many "pre-Allis" (1955 and earlier) Gleaners out there.  The self-propelled Gleaner didn't appear until 1951, so you tend to see more pull-types.  We have a 1952 Model A (Ford six cylinder engine) with serial number 52A-4074 that dad purchased from the original owner in the late 1970's.  I also have a 1955 Model T that I purchased from the second owner several years ago.

I would say that yours is one of the early self-propelled units.  Post some pictures for us sometime.  There was a 1952 Model A at an auction in Pierce, NE recently but I'm not sure what it sold for.
