After being gone for about 10 years I got dad's WD45 back from my brother-in-law.  I was dissappointed to find out that it had been sitting outside the entire time.  Thus the factory power steering is frozen, engine is frozen and the transmission may be frozen.  The good news is the metal is straight and it was dad's.  I've got MMO in the cylinders and in the power steering gear.  This should be fun...........when it's done!  Serial number is 235216 making it a 1957 and one of the last ones made.  At some point maybe this fall I'll haul it down to Memphis and get going on it for real.

Nice tractor, were you concerned it might come off the trailer?????  :-)  Or did you just not have a place for the extra straps?

I do tend to be an overachiever when it comes to strapping.  The day before I brought the finished Ferguson back to the farm and I had 4 yellow, 4 blue and 4 red straps on it.  I was paranoid that the DOT would pull me over from all the doom and gloom talk that has been on here in the past so I was taking no chances.  LOL

I have heard the DOT is worse back East, but in either case, I don't think they would ever stop your rig, they typically aren't stopping car trailers behind pick-ups, but it can happen.  That is a good straight clean new trailer, with a simple load, as long as you weren't pulling it with a Datsun, I don't think they would look twice.  As for the Cargo straps, here is how I interpret the DOT Cargo Securement rules, other may see it differently.

That Tractor kinda falls in between the cracks, it weighs less than 10,000lbs, which is where the DOT says it turns into "Heavy Equipment"  but in the description of "heavy Equipment" they specifically list "tractors."  I believe technically it falls into the General Cargo Securing Requirements, requiring less tie downs, with less strength, but have you ever won an argument with a DOT officer???

Frankly to avoid any issue with an overzealous DOT officer, on any tractor you should use chains, with a Working Load Limit of 5000lbs, or more.  You should also use the four point tie-down method, like you did with the straps.

Technically I think you were well within the rules, but I understand you desire to not "look" like a target.

That is a speacial tractor as it was in your family, I don't think the narrow front was sold much in 57 which will make it kind of unique.

That looks like a very nice project. Straight metal, good tires and best of all, a personal connection to it! Should be a labor of loveSmile I take it that your Dad was the original owner? That's a great!
I also take no chances when securing loads. I use 2" straps on the front and chains/boomers on the rear, both over-rated for the weight. I ratchet down the front straps taught and then really crank the boomers on the rear.  I'm so buffaloed by the Highway Patrol that I even check all the clearance lights before I leave! I've never been stopped; I just don't want to endure any of that grilling and ticketing process.Ouch

Soilguy, you actually bring up a good point.

Dad used to haul a lot of heavy over-width, overweight equipment around in the 80s and 90s, all permitted properly.  He always told me, run with one clearance light out, somewhere towards the front of the trailer on the driver's side.  He said that when he worked really hard to make sure "everything" worked correctly, and all was right with the truck, and load, DOT would spend an hour on his inspection, and they would dig until they found some obscure ruling somewhere to ticket him, and it typically wasn't cheap.  That's when he decided to run one clearance light out, and when he got stopped for inspection, the found the light in under 30 seconds usually, and was down the road in no time, and a simple little equipment ticket, that cost next to nothing.

That is a real straight machine you have there. It's about what I started with last fall with my own WD45. I am hoping to finally get mine going next week after a bit of time going through the whole thing. I have much work waiting for it and won't delay in putting it to work when it gets running again. Have fun with yours.

My brother-in-law had already purchased a new battery box and new Firestone tires for it on new rims and I got those with the tractor.  I told him I'd pay him what he had in them.  So the first problem was to install the new tires and I didn't want to unload the tractor to do it.  I blocked the rear of the trailer and rolled the tractor back to make the tire change easier.  The easy part was my cousins next door that had a front end loader.
Next picture shows the new rear tires on.  Their dusty but have the little tits still on them.  He bought them just after he got the tractor.

Oh and dad was the first owner.  In fact I found mom's log book where she said dad went to price new tractor in the fall of 1956.  Then a month later she said dad took tractor to get a tune up.  (First tractor was a John Deere model A on the farm.)  Then she said a week later that dad washed tractor.  A couple of days after that log entry she said dad was painting tractor.  I had to read between the lines and figured out that dad was getting the John Deere ready to sell to help raise the funds for the WD45's purchase.

Will do!
The tractor is still on the trailer up at the farm.  Every time I go to the farm I shoot a mixture of MMO, ATF, brake fluid and Deep Creap in the cylinders and rock it with the hand crank.  It's not budging yet.  I'm going to bring it home from the farm next month.

My shop doors were too narrow at 72" but I needed 75" to get it inside so I removed the doors and frame and rebuilt both two weeks ago and now the doors are 81" wide.  So that's one less roadblock out of the way.

I pulled the power steering motor drive assembly off it in June and have it partially apart sitting in a bucket of ATF and acetone.  Been in there about 5 weeks.  Still frozen.  Need to pull it out and see if it will budge yet.

So nothing much has happened yet.  September will be here soon and that's when things will start moving faster.

Thanks Steve for that link.  It sounds like it's a good product.  I think I'll pull it out of the bucket tonight and if it's still locked tight then I'll go ahead and place an order for some and give that a try.

Stan I'm very happy that you got to keep your fathers tractor. My dad always traded one in when he bought another and by now they are new and modern and a little much for my 5 acre ozark farm-ett. If you use the evaporust please let us know how it works. That tractor is very straight to start with and I assume well kept besides the time outside. Good job..

Stan: Nice to see the machine "come home"...Looked for my dad's 38' (?) Oliver 60 for  quite a few years only to find out it was junked out... Still have a Farmall Super C (1950) sitting in the garage up at the farm that the father-in-law bought new.. Use it to cut some hay and drag around a spike tooth harrow...Not much for hydraulics but still runs good...

Keep working with that beast regarding freeing everything up and getting it running. I got my own running several months ago and can clearly state that it is an amazing machine. So far I have employed mine in various field tasks and pto based tasks. Flawless execution. The WD45 has quickly become my favorite small tractor around my place. I make excuses to start it up and run it. Including useless rides in the countryside. My poor Harry Ferguson languishes a lot these days. I use it for 3 point attachments but this is not so often anymore. Up in the fall; putting the WD45 to some real work. I have 13 acres to plow, disc, and drag in preparation of planting a new hayfield. I have a 3x14" Allis Chalmers plow ready to roll. I look forward to snorting around this new field with this setup. :)
