I've found a fella in my area that has a D-19 diesel with factory turbo charger.  It's his toy machine and he's aware that it's not common.  I've never come across one with the turbo.  Were there many?  Is this really a factory rarity or is it a modification made in years past?  He and I were curious so I thought I'd bring it to the A-C bretheren for input.

Yes every D19 diesel has a factory turbo-Allis was the first to put a turbo on a row crop tractor.

Hmm, yep I let my stupid show.  I'd always assumed the D21 was the first with a turbo but tractordata also made my error clear.  Thanks for the info.  I won't forget thist trivia.

I did some research on some firsts in diesel farm tractors for the Half Century of Progress show last year when we showcased the 50th anniversary of the D19 Turbocharged Diesel. I have the Nebraska test number for each tractor where available. Here is the results:

1931- Caterpillar Diesel Sixty: First Diesel Farm Tractor, First Diesel Farm Tractor on tracks (Test 208)

1935- McCormick-Deering WD40: First Diesel farm tractor on wheels (Test 246)

1936- Caterpillar RD8: First farm tractor over 100 horsepower, First farm tractor on tracks over 100 horsepower (Test 257)

1959- John Deere 8010: First Farm Tractor on wheels over 100 Horsepower, First 4wd over 100 Horsepower

1961- Allis Chalmers D19 Diesel: First turbocharged Farm Tractor,First tractor tested at Nebraska with a turbo (Test 811), First Turbocharged 2wd, First Turbocharged row crop

1961- International 4300: First turbocharged 4wd, First turbocharged over 100 horsepower farm tractor(Test 815)

1962- John Deere 5010: First 2wd over 100 horsepower (Test 828)

1963- Allis Chalmers D21 Series 1: (all Series 1 were non turbocharged) The D21 was introduced with 24.5-32 rear tires, At some point during the Series 1 production 18.4-34 (18.4-38 may have been available) rear tires were made a factory option ( an adjustable front axle was standard from what I can tell) making the D21 the: First over 100 horsepower row crop farm tractor (Test 855)

May 19, 1965- Allis Chalmers D21 Series 2 production begins at serial # 2201 (all Series 2 were turbocharged): First over 100 horsepower turbocharged row crop farm tractor (Test 904)

1965- International / Farmall 1206: First International turbocharged 2wd and row crop (Test 910)

Yes not rare, but alot less common than the 19 gas. Also its much harder to find one in good shape.
