I know it may not be the right area, but you could put in a tractor right?!?!?!
 
My friend and I were talking today and he has this 460 KW V 16 detroit diesel that ran a federal building in Portland area. Its in the NW now. Last ran in July of 2006 and has 980 documented hrs. Twin turbo and twin Superchargers. Weight of system with all the generator in tact is right at 12,000lbs.
 
So what is it worth, I heard that they have weak cranks? I was told a little over scrap value. I guess they really sucked fuel.
 
Anyways good or bad. I know the guy wants to get rid of it. I will find out cost tomorrow. If anyone is interested, you can PM me.

I saw a few of them with broken cranks. they are noisy but strong runners usually. there should be a market for that but more in the construction/mining area. that engine would be worth something if u could find a buyer. I have a 6v53 but have not tried to sell it yet. just my 2cents

Darryl, thanks for the email pictures. The engine is a 16V71T likely about a 1976-7 vintage. The 8V71T was 350 HP in trucks. People either love or hate those old Detroits.
I have a soft spot for them. Too bad it's not a 12V71T because it would make an interesting install into an old Kenworth.

71 searies had 71 cu in per cydl and  aprox 30 hp per cydl

A company I worked for years ago had a very similar set up to power a portable concrete crushing mill. It had 2 275 gallon oil tanks for fuel and was good for about 2 1/2 days on fuel. The generator is worth good money in scrap and the engine is a good runner more of a curiosity piece now. I saw one in a long nose Pete 359 at a show. Detroit 2 strokes are good simple engines easy to work on and I like them but their day is past with $4.75 a gallon diesel. T.J.

Years ago (mid 70's) I ran a blacktop plant with one of those, it was in a van trailer with a undermount fuel tank that held about 2000 gal of fuel. That motor was two 8-71's bolted end to end somehow. As best I can remember it was 400 kva

The 2 strokes were neat in that you could change things around so much. Right or left hand rotation. Blower,either side. I saw 2 6-71's mounted side by side on some oil well equipment and the were mirror images of each other. Blowers were on the outsides and they drove a gearbox.One was LH and the other was RH rotation.
