The neighbor kid asked for some help with his WD, So first things first and that was the Battery. Then no fire so we pulled the mag took it to my shop and went through the troubleshooting process. We simply don't have enough current off of the coil. So i thought i would check a few of the other ones that i have here since i will need to get a few of them working here before to long. Ended up with 4 cold Mags.
I know i can send them out and have them redone, i'm not so interested in doing that since i have over 30 years of motor and control experiance.
The question is can any of you guys point me to a site or a resource for building or buying a coil to re energize the magnet in these? And how available are FM coils, impulse parts and any of the parts in the mags besides points, condensor, rotor and caps?
Cane you point me to a source for these parts.
Thanks for your help
Dave

Fairbanks-Morse coils should be easy to come by. I have recharged the magnets in F-M and Wico mags by wrapping a spool of wire around them and giving them a shot with a 10 amp battery charger. If you have the metal working equipment required, you can build a good magnet charger.

Let us know when you've had enough:
It's a lot easier to have Steve in NJ repair stuff, or supply parts, if you want to Do It Yourself.

Thanks for the info.
Its always easier to have someone else do it but its not as much fun.
Every person has a differant idea of what fun is. I am haveing fun learning about it. I think i would enjoy fixing them. I just need to decide weather or not i want to invest in the proper tools.
I think everyone would agree that haveing the proper tools makes the differance between enjoying what you do and not.

Dave, If you need parts or just get tired of fooling with the mags call Steve B&B. He has the parts and the expertise to be of whatever assistance you need.
You know, at Steve's display at the NY GOTO in 2003 it really brought back some very old memories to just hold a few of the mag parts that we used. See you in May at Fred Wilke's. Good Luck! Bill Long Edited by Bill Long - 09 Apr 2012 at 9:26am |
