Does anyone know of a connection between AC and Le Roi and the Le Roi Tractair?
I'm in a discussion on another list about it. I looked in all of my AC books and can find no connection other than one sentence in "An Industrial Heritage - Allis Chalmers Corporation" where it says AC used Le Roi engines in the 6-12. The fellow on the other list says he's been told by several folks that the engines are very similar and that either AC built engines for Le Roi or Le Roi built engines for AC. He's thinking tractors much later than the 6-12 had Le Roi or Le Roi designed engines. It's news to me but I did find that one reference in the book. I'm not trying to win a fight or something. It's a friendly discussion and both of us are just trying to learn something. Pankey, whatever you think you know about it I don't want to hear it. You have ZERO credibility with me! Thanks.

I do not know for certain, but the timeline would seem to suggest that Allis either sold rights to, or produced castings for LeRoi. I have no way to know the exact timelines for LeRoi, but I think the 201 which is the basis for the 226 engine Allis made, predates the LeRoi engines.

I don't know a thing other than I was told years ago by old Allis mechanics that Allis used to cast blocks for LeRoi.

thanks, still amazes me every time I see pictures of a 6-12 or 10-18, the design is really cool.
Wonder if there are still any out there in a barn not found yet? Anyone know if the 6-12 duplex ever sold? Or if any made it? Edited by Don(MI) - 26 Jan 2012 at 6:42pm |

Thanks RFDeere, It would be cool to see a Duplex surface but i am not going to hold my breath. It wouldn't take much to recreate one but there are so few 6-12's left i can't see that happening. Keep checking Barns. |

Dave, your 6-12 is an industrial version to which makes it fairly unique, correct ?

I always understood that A-C licesenced and provided tooling for Leroi to build 201 cid and 226 cid engines that shared the same architecture, bore centers, external dimensions, etc. with the comtemporary W series Allis engines of that era. Kip

At our scrap yard, they have a Bantam dragline. It has a LeRoi to run the crane. The engine looks like every WC engine you have ever seen. On Ebay, there is a LeRoi 4 cylinder diesel that looks like it could go into a WD45 gas tractor. There had to be in with each other some how.

That's really interesting, Dave. I just wondered being a industrial setup maybe AC had painted it different than Green and Red. Your family is probably the only 6-12 owners that have owned one since the 50's !

The only thing I can remember is that one time a gentlemen approached me and asked if we used LeRoy engines. I told him we made our own. He wanted a water pump. Showed him one of ours. He took it and did not return it.
Good Luck! Bill long |
