We are planning to do a tractor drive here in Lynden WA. at the 2013 GOTO a day before the show. He are heading out the show grounds, and head to Birch Bay which is the edge of the Puget Sound, drive by the waterfront in Blaine and go by the Peach Arch Boder Crossing, and take back roads back to the show. It is a bout a 43 mile round trip and will have lunch by the water.

 
Anyways, the issues we are having is that I talked to the local Traffic Sargent and he said we had to get a permit for this since it is not a farming issue ,but a parade issue. He said we had to go to the permit dept, get a permit, fill out and then back to the traffic sargent and possibly the Blaine councit, because we are going to be driving through the city. I figure we will have between 30 to 40 plus tractors. The sargent also said we need to hire a off duty officer at $65.00  a hour for traffic congestion.
 
We had a meeting last night and most of them said just do the drive.. What have you members or folks ran into when you do a tractor drive ? He have to much law stuff we are dealing with to do this. I am going to do this one way or the other and right now look at getting a sponcer for this event for the costs maybe.
 
Looking for feedback which way to procede.

Man you sure got a bum deal.
 
At our tractor ride last fall (65 pieces of old iron), the county sheriff led the drive and had deputies help us across the major highways.

In Missouri we are required to obtain a permit from the Local State Patrol Office, then we have to check in with any Municipality to see if they request a parade permit. We have never had to hire anyone to work traffic. I have also worked with the local sheriffs office to help coordinate with the State Highway Patrol for escort. I would start over and go to the top, talk to the people at the highway patrol office and see what they say.  Dave.

Don't know about the large rides  that have 100s of tractors, but our small ones, 30 or so have never had to have a Permit.  The County or City Law Enforcement has always  been  glad to help through larger towns or crossing major hiways.  Of course we're about as Rural as you can get.  lol

Do you have a Volunteer fire Department with fire police? Maybe you could get them for trafic control. Fire police do traffic control for parades around here. 
The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

  First of all I don't want to rain on your parade but, Touring over rural / farming  country is one thing, but what you have planned will require  event insurance, for your own safety as an organizer,and rules for the safety of all involved.   It ain't 1950 anymore. The "what ifs"  leave you wide open for a bottom feeder with license to practice law in the event of an accident of any sort, even before you leave your grounds, I have seen people hurt loading and unloading let alone dodgeing the impatient, texting , late for work doofus. You will need it or you won't sleep at night.  Spread the cost of the event insurance over the particapents and sponsors.   I would get the local C of C , radio stations, equipment dealers and others involved to share in the costs and promotion. .  Sooner or later , someone will want to see your insurance binder , particapant policy, rules, etc.  What you want to do will draw too much attention to fly under the radar.  BTW it sounds like fun , wish I could attend, the WC  I'm putting together  is mainly for that sort of event I have been on the Mackinaw Bridge Tractor Crossing, and  helped a very little the first year, it will be a lot of work, but work the angle with the business's that stand to benifit from your ride,   They can hold some sway  with local authorities.   This may grow to be big, so call it the 1st Annual.....Good luck.
