i was just offered a ford 4000 gas, a 6' brush mower, 5' tiller, and plow as trade for my motorcycle. i really don't know anything about ford tractors other than they made 5 for everyone alive in any given year.
anyway, i was kinda wanting to sell the bike and my D17 to get something a little more modern w/ a few less problems.....ie fluid leaks, crappy 3pt set-up, charging system not working, fluid leaks, crappy fenders, fluid leaks....typical stuff on a tractor that sits outside for 40 years. setting your AC bias aside, would you take the trade if it's in really good shape? if it's a tractor that has nice metal, doesn't leak, has a solid 3pt set-up, gauges work....no real issues, should i go that route? i'd rather have orange....a 180/185, or a 6080 fwa if i just happen to be in the right place at the right time. basically right now i want a tractor in better shape, but i'm also not gaining much w/ the ford....still gas, same hp rating, isn't near as nice looking as the D series tractors. or, would you keep the D17 and slowly start replacing gaskets in areas that leak, fix the charging system (whatever the problem is) buy a factory 3pt....basically sink another $1000 into it.
of course, if the ford is the select-o-speed tranny, i don't have a decision to make. but i don't know yet and i haven't seen any pics yet either.
anyway, throw your thoughts out there, i'm open to opinions.

You can get any parts for that 4000 that you need. I traded a John Deere 950 for a ford 4000 and I like it. And I just traded two other allis for a ford 3600. I am only going to keep one Allis, my wd45 lp. You can get sheet metal for fords.

as far as operation goes, anything special w/ the ford? i really like the power director on the allis....comes in very handy when i mow through heavy crap and just need to slow down/creep through a small patch.
i kinda hate to get rid of my only allis.....i'd hate to have no reason to have the t-shirts and hats!

If the ford is in good shape take the trade. You can always take the ford and the d17 and do a two for one trade on another allis, just use the ford for trade bait.

I have a 185 Allis, 6060 Allis, Model K gleaner, SMTA ferg 35, ferg 20 (paps first tractor, Allis B (wife's)John Deere 240 skid loader and a bunch of the usual farm stuff.

When the Allis breaks he can run the Ford instead of sitting on the computer all day looking for parts.

I had a Ford 851 gas 5 peed for about 20 years and it was a good tractor. It is the earlier version of the 4000. The 851 has also been gone about 20 years.

Is it an old Ford 4000 (red/gray/beige) or a newer "World 4000" (blue)?
I grew up on Fords, and regardless of what many say here, always found them to be good tractors. They ran my All Crop 60 just fine.

I had a Ford 5000 I used to run some hay equipment with. It was a good tractor and I never had problems with it, had plenty of power and was reliable. I bought a bigger tractor and used the Ford as a back up until I eventually sold it. It was an excellent machine but you just gotta ask yourself which would you use more a tractor or a motorcycle

i know which i've used more over the last year....the tractor by far. we moved out to the country a year ago and i've been on the bike 4 times. the 2mile gravel road just isn't appealing. on the other hand, it's a great bike and i'll probably regret getting rid of it. too bad i don't have a buyer for it and the D17, i wouldn't have to worry making a trade. also, too bad i didn't win the lottery....wouldn't have to make this decision either. the guy w/ the equipment is out of town, but said he'll send pics as soon as he gets back. i'm kinda hoping it's a later model blue 4000. did they also have a 8x2 tranny? was it worth a crap? the only bad i've ever heard is about the select-o-speed tranny.

The ford will not be jumping out of any gears. My old Allis dealer droped Allis when it change from Allis Chalmers. He became a Ford dealer, he told me that fords was way ahead of Allis. I do not agree with that, but it is all about the parts.

I have never seen any Allis on land scaping jobs or road work, and not many john deeres, but you will see a lots of fords.

Be careful, ford quit making the filter for some of the select-o-speed transmissions, so the only supply left is NOS, and those aren't going to last forever. I am not sure if it was the early or late SOS transmissions they quit making the filter for, but if you do a search on ytmag forums, you should find a couple posts about it. Otherwise, we have had nothing but great luck out of our Ford 10-series tractors. We went Ford after Allis went under, and they both are running strong still (many of their engines are good for 10,000+ hours maintained somewhat well).

I'd want to see and try out the ford and get some idea of its condition and what value to put on it . Whats the motorcycle worth ? Those questions need to be answered. If they are close in value, and YOU like operating the ford...trade. You'll get alittle more use out of the tractor this winter too.

What kind of bike are you trading? As was mentioned before is it an early 4 cyl 4000 or the later 3 cylinder? A 4000 Ford is not as powerful as a D17 but will have a better 3pt. I wouldn't want an early 4 cylinder 4000, IMO a D17 in good shape would be a better tractor. Even with an aftermarket 3pt and blade the D17 will move more snow.
A 5000 would be a better match to a D17, the neighbor has one and it's a completely different (and better) animal than a 4000.

They are ok but not the worlds greatest tractor ever built. I use the neighbors with a after market cab and loader and to me it seems clumbsy. I had to choose between the 4000 and my grandfathers D17 I would choose the 17. I would recommend to splrudge to get a 6080 we got 2 and I feel they are one of the best tractors ever built.

County has a Allis 190XT painted yellow they use for ditch mowing, opening some drifted roads with a snow blower, and it has a front brush and rear grader blade they use to sweep the road way after the asphalt grinder has gone through. Also had a loader they use for driving signs and yard clean up. I'd get a pic, but whenever I see it I'm always driving or don't have my camera handy.
