Hello all. I am new here so take it easy on me. My grandpa has an old WD 45 that hasnt run in probably 7 years or so thats been out on the back 40 at my dads place. The good news is i got it runnin today, granted not the greatest, but it runs. Now ive never done much with tractors other than the occasional food plot for deer but now after tinkerin with this thing and goin for a hay ride on one of those green two cylinder tractors it has sparked an interest to me and i would like a little more info on this WD45. If i read the serial number reference chart right i believe its a 1954. The serial number is 208663. If i found the right number. It was just under the key near the shifter, on the top of the rear end. Other than the year can anyone fill me in a little bit. Like the horsepower rating, where it was built, and what not or any other info the serial number may tell. Sorry for bein so long winded for such a simple question. Thanks, Bryant |

First, Let me welcome you to the Unofficial Allis Chalmers Forum. You will finds loads of information and help here. The serial number of the WD-45 is located on the rear end near the top near - I think the left brake housing. The '45 was build from 1953-57. It was build in West Allis, WI. In fact, with my father we made a trip to the factory and watched them come off the line. The tractor was in our area a full three plow tractor. I do not know the exact power rating. Only, that we suprised a lot of people with the power of this unit. It looked sooo small. You will find the '45 to be a very reliable and dependable tractor. YOu may want to check the gear shift since some have a tendency to pop out of usually third gear.
Let us know what else you may want.
Also, let us know how you are doin with your GRANDFATHER's tractor.
Good Luck!
Bill Long

I think you found a casting number if it was near the shifter or you don't have a WD45. I'll see if I can get you a picture. The WD45 is my favorite, I have 8 of them.
Here is a picture of the serial number location depicted by the white tape.

First, welcome aboard. You'll find lots of friendly folks on here who are only too willing to offer advice and answer questions. Now...according to Terry Dean's AC Data Book, the WD45 underwent testing at Nebraska University and was measured at 43 pto hp and 38 drawbar hp. Hope this helps, and don't be shy!

You have a 1956 model,I also have a 56 WD45.Very good all around tractor with alot of power for it's size.
Have you cleaned out carb and gas tank yet.I solved a lot of my 45's problems by doing a very thorough cleaning. New Good thick wires from battery to starter and ground helped starter out dramatically.Mine was sitting out for as few years also. Welcome to this site, keep us informed on your progress. |

Well i think alot of the runnability issues are due to a leaking intake/exhuast manilfold gasket. Im gonna get one ordered and replace it. I know for sure the exhuast side of the manifold is leaking horribly so im assumming the intake side is too. It may not be all of the problem but it certianly cant hurt.

Sounds like a good plan, but fair warning: That is what I planned to do with my WD "Wayne" and in the process of removing the manifold, I snapped off a couple of the manifold bolts in the head. Which led to removing the head and going through it, which was a blessing in disguise. Cleaned and lapped the valves and checked everything over good. You may want to do that too, depending on the condition of everything. Good seating valves make a big difference on a good running engine. And if you're worried about that being too big of a job to pull the head, don't be. If I can do it, just about anyone with some basic smarts can too! :) Good luck and keep us posted, and we love pics too..... (you can search for some of my posts about going through Wayne, it may give you some incite)

Yea im not really worried about doing anything mechanical...im an a.s.e. certified auto mechanic so i know my way around things. But i do appreciate the advice. Im sure it wont be easy to remove the manifold. On a different note another cool thing about this tractor is it has a bunch of implements with it too. We ave a plow, disc, hay rake, sical bar mower, and blade. And it used to have a loader or bucket on the front, unfortunetly the bucket and arms got scrapped at some point. Im not sure who made what but its still cool.
