Just had an idea today. Seems like there is so much valuable information being talked about on this forum, which is awesome. But after time goes by, the threads usually are buried deep into who knows where. The only good way to find an old thread is to search for it, if you can remember the title, or what it was about.
Throwing this out there, maybe someone already suggested it.
Would it be worth it to create a "How to" sub forum only?
A place where all information could be located in one spot, for working on tractors. Possibly classified by model of tractor.
For example, "How to get correct mag timing on C or B tractors".
Or, "How to properly install OH kit on WD engine".
Many of these things have already been on here, with great knowledge being handed out, and it might be worth it to store it in a "how to" sub forum.
Any thoughts?

I think a FAQ page has been talked about before And I think it would be a great asset to this site. There is a FAQ page but not for tractor repair. The forum talk page was set up to make suggestions like this, maybe this should be moved over there?

I think that's a great idea. As a new Allis owner, I have a lot of 'silly' questions that I need answered, but sometimes have troulbe finding using the forums search function. If there was a FAQ or 'knowledge repository' it would be very helpful without having to bog the main forum down with questions that have been asked a thousand times before.

It would be great to have a section for each model. Then subsection for "how to do" and a subsection for pictures, etc.
Also would be great if the Cubs would win the world series.... |

Yeah, and fix the problem with searching for a Model C or B. You can't search using less than 3 letters.

Farmallcub.com has had one for years. Sometimes more than one person will contribute to the same topic but that's not ll bad to get more than one perspective on how to do something.

It only sounds good on paper because alot of people on here post anything in any forum instead of reading the forum title and what should be posted on it.

Forgot to say that even this topic is in the wrong place.
It should not be in Farm Equipment. It should be posted in Forum Talk. See what I mean. |

I like the idea, but maybe the moderator, or a forum volunteer could kind of police that section, making sure one help topic is posted twice and that all topics posted actually belong in that section. The Dodge Diesel fourm I am a part of has one, they call it "the sticky" and any post into that forum has to be approved by the Moderator. It is open to all as a read only format.

I would be more than happy to be that person. If people had suggestions on which threads they wanted to add from the Farm Equipment forum, they could PM me what they would like...
What are us young kids gonna do for information, when you old guys are gone?? lol Makes sense to retain all information now, for the future AC people. I don't think this is a "want just for fun" situation, as much as it would be an archive for the future.

Good way to get people riled up and mad.
There is almost always more than one way to skin a cat and each one can be correct. What I see is that when a way that will work fine is not the way most do it several will jump in to down grade the way they do not understand without trying to think it thru to see more than one way will come to the same end.
Case In Point: (adjusting a carburetor) Last week while adjusting a carburetor after cleaning and rebuilding it came to mind while adjusting the idle that when Gerald will tell you fast and I say smooth we are saying the same thing. When you smooth out the idle at the slowest possible rpm that you are idling the fastest it will run on the slowest stop screw setting. I can see he gets riled when I state smoothest and jumps all over me. My bet is that if we both adjusted the same tractor at different times we would end up with the same rpm. To me fastest was meaning faster than necessary. I gather from his comments that the word smooth has a different meaning to him. A difference in terminology can cause confusion.
Basic older engine repair is not rocket science. If it was I would have to ask how too to rebuild and keep my many tractors running and you have never seen a how too question from me. I received the basics details in the 1950's. Building and racing a stock car in the early 1960's helped to find details that I skipped and wrung out my pocket book. You will not get into problems rebuilding any of the older engines or any part of it with a (detailed) understanding of how and why each part functions along with the specs. (proper dimensions and clearances) Without that understanding it is hard for a person to follow someones instructions in detail or for anyone to properly diagnose a problem explained by someone that does not have that understanding. Like the blind leading the blind.
Now if someone would have a Jetsons jet car that could shoot to the problem tractor and hands on instruct to help solve the repair problems I would vote YES.

It is more than just a How To section as well, any usefull tech info is in there, including part number cross referances, part number in geberal section so when you go to the auto parts store you can just give them the part numbers. Also has a section on there for part numbers from OTC for specialty tools. When anyone has a "how to" post they usually take photos as they are doing the repair on there truck, followed by a write up under each pic. One guy did an auto trans rebuild on there, with step by step pics and captions, including the removal and installation. Lot of good info on the sticky, it has saved me a few times, as it has factory wiring diagrams as well. With all of that being said, you can see why there is a need for "police", as when it comes to specific technical data, we want to be sure that the info posted is 100% correct. |

Is there a way for each topic to show up here, like they currently are, then after a day or so, they get filed in different categories?
This way, the ease of seeing every post is there, and open for all to view and comment/get comments.
I've been in other forums, and I don't go to every sub category, though I might have a comment that could help someone out. Any thoughts? |

I think that is a great idea.
One of the main problems I see in this forum is that a lot of stuff ends up in the wrong section. A lot of topice end up in Farm Equipment. I feel like the structure of the forum and lack of activity in the other sections contributes to this.
Maybe we also need more sections added to forum to keep things from getting lumped into just farm equipment. Also, if a "recent posts" button could be moved/added in a more visable area, that would help a lot.
Just an idea for a new forum structure.....

I was just brainstorming. I think we need more sub forum without it turning into a micro managed mess. In order for it to work admins would have to move threads created in the wrong areas.
