for a WD45? Temp in single digits today, went out to start the 45, and it just groaned. Going to have some type of heater for next round of cold/snow. I'm thinking of a frost plug heater, but maybe there is something that works better. (tractor sits in a shed with one side open, so it's like being outside, but protected from rain, etc.)

I don't think that is going to help get it started in cold weather, might help keep you going in cold weather.

For getting it started? Ether, hand crank, foot clutch lock. make friends with it.

How do you install a block heater, or frost plug on a WD?
I would think a tank or hose heater (CATS)? use heater hose or lower radiator hose?

No freeze plugs in WC-D17.Takes a tank heater and some engineereing.

How about using an infrared light bulb as a heater? Like the ones for keeping chickens or french fries hot ?
Placed under the tractor, it should heat up the engine not the air ?
No risk of 'frost plug' problems.....especially in this weather !

cheap and easy heater is a magnetic heater and can move to different tractors as needed

I have always trusted the steel trouble light with a 100 watt bulb. I also have a dipstick heater that worked great in a pickup I had once.

Get a battery maintainer. If the battery has a full charge it will crank. I have them on everything that's not used on a regular basis. The batteries will also last longer if kept charged.

Hook A tank heater into the block drain donw by the carb. run the return hose up to the plug in the left side of the water pump. only takes a few minutes to install. put a street L in the block and the barbed fitting into it. This way you won't have a kinked hose. I installed mine last winter when it was -20 F. I also have a tarp wrapped all the way around the engine. It started without it but you couldn't use it for 30 minutes. With the block heater plugged it about 30 minutes earler I can start and use it by the time I get the extension cord out of the way.

Magnetic heater stuck on pan, tractor out of cold wind, warm oil, engine will crank better, and if all is tuned fire in 2-3 seconds, ready to work.

I started my 170 at -15 one morning and that was after being town to -30 the night before with no heater. It has a new battery in it and I rebuilt the carb. Had to crank it a few times on full choke but she eventually took off. I would check the battery and make sure everything else is up to par... it should start. Mine sits under a roof but is open on two sides too.

0W-20 Mobil 1 oil in it and no heaters are needed. The CA starts easily and oil pressure builds quickly with Mobil 1.

on all of our 45,s on the farm in indiana,we had heaters installed in the drain ports of the block.it had an electric motor type pump that kept the water at about 70-80 degrees when plugged in on shut down.definitly need on on the 45 diesel
