My almost ten year old bulldog, Otis, passed away last night. He was not well, heart failure. But got up yesterday. We went to the barn got the morning milking done, ran errands, ate scrambled eggs, went and fed the heifers. He carried the feed scoop and ran through the mud. Mud was his favorite thing. Then i carried the scoop back and he carried the bucket. We worked on putting new seat covers in the truck. When we drove to the barn, he got up in my lap as he always did. We did the milking played some fetch. The last couple of weeks fetch was variable and last night there were a couple of throws that were us going to get the ball together. We went home, washed up. He didn't want ice cream for dinner and was breathing labored. He got in his bed and died a couple of hours later. May we all be so lucky to go that way.
I don't mean to whine but for the first in decades, i am in an empty house. I can't remember feeling this alone and i can't stand the thought of going to the barn by myself.
Thanks for listening to an old man complain. I didn't know who else to tell

Sorry for your loss Dr P. don’t let that loneliness get you down. Amazing how a dog can become such a good friend and have such an impact on our lives. They are always willing to listen no matter the mood yet they never complain. Don’t give up getting another furry friend when the time is right but to fill that void go visit the neighbor’s dogs or stop by the animal shelter and get your fix, who knows what could happen when the time is right. Thanks for sharing with us, this is a reminder of how short a time we get with our furry family members. Take care

Think on our three now long gone often. Three fine pups, also had four cats all bed stealers.
Have not found it inside to get another just yet.

Thanks for sharing, sorry for your loss.

The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog. Mark Twain. Sorry for your loss. Dogs are family. Give another a chance to claim your heart.

As a fellow dog lover and owner, I feel your pain, amazing how quiet a house becomes without those paws on the floor. They become family and children that we take for granted until they leave us. I’m glad he was home with you, and I’m quite sure that his last thoughts were of his life with you. He runs the skies young and healthy now, look up and smile at him when you think of him. Prayers and Peace my friend❤️🐾

Dr. P, very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and companion. Good that he passed peacefully at home in familiar surroundings. Treasure the good memories he gave you.   Dogs are family and losing one really hurts. Praying that God gives you comfort and strength in the coming days.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.
